UDBG Summer Internships

The Parvis Family Summer Internship at the University of Delaware Botanic Gardens (UDBG) offers undergraduates, eager to learn about plants, the environment, their management, and horticulture, an opportunity to receive valuable hands-on learning experiences by working in the botanic gardens. The Parvis Family Summer Intern will work alongside UDBG horticulture staff and volunteers in all phases of public garden maintenance and development, receiving hands-on opportunities related to horticulture, public gardening and landscape design. The intern may also be involved in special projects such as accession records, garden inventories, plant signage, marketing, web site projects or photography. Training sessions, public educational programs, and field trips are also offered to help broaden the intern’s horticultural horizon.

The Lafferty Family Garden Internship Fund at UDBG offers an undergraduate student selected from applicants across the U.S. eager to learn about plants, the environment, their management, and horticulture. It is an opportunity to receive valuable hands-on learning experiences by working in the botanic. The Lafferty Family Garden Intern will work alongside UDBG horticulture staff and volunteers in all phases of public garden maintenance and development, receiving hands-on opportunities related to horticulture, public gardening and landscape design. The intern may also be involved in special projects such as accession records, garden inventories, plant signage, marketing, website projects, or photography. Training sessions, public educational programs, and field trips are also offered to help broaden the intern’s horticultural horizon.

Recipients of the endowed internships will receive unique opportunities to attend professional meetings, travel to nearby gardens or participate in special projects. Additionally, those who qualify, a housing assistance stipend of $1500 will be provided for those who qualify. The UDBG has four full time summer internships available for 2016. Students are expected to be highly motivated, hard-working, dependable, and able to work in groups and independently. Interns will spend the summer working in the gardens with the garden staff learning maintenance skills and gaining experience in public horticulture. Students will work outside performing a wide variety of maintenance tasks, such as mowing, weed control, pruning, planting, hardscape installation, etc.  Additionally, they will develop specialized skills such as curatorial work, detailed pruning and propagation. Students will work individually and in groups to accomplish the goals set forth for the summer. Students will take field trips to local public gardens to further their experience in public horticulture. Students are required to keep a weekly log of their activities and may enroll in PLSC 364 for (3 hr) internship credit. For additional information, please feel free to contact Dr. John Frett.
