
Join Mt. Cuba Center’s Conservation & Research Division as a Plant Conservation Science Technician! In this role, you’ll support vital research projects focused on plant conservation, working in our gardens, natural lands, and laboratory settings. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to scientific research while helping advance native plant conservation.
Essential Functions
- Conservation Research Support (80%)
- Support research projects through all stages from development to information dissemination
- Conduct plant conservation research in laboratory, field, and garden settings
- Perform literature reviews and assist with data analysis
- Collect and maintain detailed research data using established methodologies
- Safely operate and maintain laboratory and field research equipment
- Contribute to research publications and web content development
- Project & Event Support (20%)
- Foster a collaborative work environment
- Guide and support employees, interns, and volunteers
- Assist with community science programs and outreach activities
- Contribute to public education through special events, tours, lectures, and classes
Qualifications and Skills
- Strong understanding of plant identification and outdoor safety practices
- Experience with:
- Scientific method and experimental design
- Field work and plot/transect-based sampling
- Laboratory procedures and safety protocols
- Data collection and record keeping
- Ability to:
- Identify native plants of the eastern temperate forest
- Safely operate field equipment and research tools
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Drive vehicles on and off road
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented and self-motivated
- Valid driver’s license required
Physical Requirements
- Combination of field and office work
- Regular standing, walking, and outdoor activity
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
- Comfortable working in various weather conditions
- Extended periods of computer work during office days
Schedule and Compensation
- Part-time position (29 hours per week)
- Schedule primarily Monday-Friday during business hours
- Primarily on-site work with occasional remote opportunities
- Occasional evening/weekend hours for special events
- Competitive hourly pay commensurate with experience
