Malware is a blanket term that’s often thrown around nowadays, but what does it really mean?

Malware is short for malicious software. The term is broadly used to refer to programs that are meant to steal information from, hijack, or destroy an electronic device or the data you have stored on that device.

Some malware is just mischievous, with a purpose of interrupting your use of a computer, phone, or tablet. But usually, malware’s purpose is tied to a criminal act–fraud, identity theft, taking control of your computer, or breaking into a network.
