The following notification was posted by the FBI on May 6:

FBI Baltimore’s Cyber Task Force just received information on a second Baltimore Unrest-themed malicious e-mail in circulation.  It was first reported to the FBI on 5/6/2015.

The subject line of the e-mail is: “O’Malley warns of more unrest if cities don’t get more help“.  The body of the e-mail was again extremely lengthy.   The e-mail was HTML-based with suspicious links embedded within the HTML code and appears to take advantage of HTML enabled e-mail systems (also sometimes referred to as a web bug).

FBI Baltimore’s recommendation when seeing the above subject line is to NOT open the e-mail and immediately report it to your IT department

Please be extremely suspicious of any unexpected emails that contain themes related to  the current unrest in Baltimore.   Any unexpected e-mail that contain similar themes should be reported to your IT department.

Bottom line: remember that scammers will use current events and “trending” topics to try to trick you into clicking links you shouldn’t! Watch out for bad links and embedded malware in email and at spurious websites that are designed to pop up in different search engines.
