JOY SPARKS SPIRIT OF 4-H AWARD

The Joy Sparks Award is given in memory of Joy G. Sparks, past State 4-H Program Leader.  Joy was a lifelong 4-H member.  She embodied what it meant to be a 4-H’er and used her Head, Heart, Hands and Health to better herself and her community.  Award recipients are chosen based on their contributions to the 4-H program and keeping Joy’s Spirit of 4-H alive.  This year’s winner was Melissa Mitchell who was honored for her dedication and service to Sussex County 4-H for over 30 years!

FRIEND OF 4-H AWARD
This award is given to individual or organizations who give to Sussex 4-H in a variety of ways.  This year’s recipient was Old Path’s Church in Georgetown and Mr. & Mrs. Frank Goehringer.  We appreciate this church opening its doors to Sussex 4-H over the past two years so that we could have programming safely in person!

Ainsley West – Service Project: “Cards for America’s Adopt a Soldier”
The mission of this project is to send homemade cards to send to soldiers and their families throughout the year, not just on special holidays.  Ainsley recruited 4-H clubs, community clubs and a few schools to help her with this project.  Ainsley says that over the past two years, some 4-H clubs donated 50-100 cards every other month!  She also says that the pandemic was actually helpful with this project since many people were looking for things to do while at home.  Ainsley has collected over 1,700 cards to send to soldiers.  She said the cards were much more thoughtful and sweet than she ever expected!  Each box she has sent has been full of love and gratitude.  Ainsley will sustain the program for many years by continuing to ask clubs and some retirement communities to contribute to her project. Ainsley has made an outstanding effort on her project and successfully been able to give back to her community in many ways!
