Harbor Lights – Elise Goehringer, Reporter
As the weather grows warmer our eagerness for spring grows with it more and more each day. The Harbor Lights 4-h club is excited to begin our spring projects and we smile with joy knowing we can now take our monthly meetings to the lovely outdoors!
The Harbor Lights 4-H club met on March 7, 2017 to have yet again a wonderfully productive meeting. As usual, old business was discussed first and we then proceeded on to new business which included the archery shoot, the clothing showcase, the junior leaders weekend, 4-h legislative day and club fundraising opportunities.
Following the meetings adjournment our club sat down to work on our spring production which is a childrens play we are honored to be taking to various libraries. Collin Cunningham, Ben Ockels, Destiny Carmona and Olivia Goehringer wrote this puppet incorporated play for the simple purpose to bring joy to young children. We are so glad 4-H has given us this amazing chance to serve our community.
We will meet again in April for another great meeting and for another chance to help make the best better!

In this meeting, we prepared for two different judging contests. After we sang songs, we talked about new business. We made over eleven thousand dollars in donations from the Spaghetti Dinner! Yay! Then, we split into two groups to learn about the contests. One group went with Mrs. West to learn about the Horticulture Judging Contest, and the other group went with Mr. Hense to learn about the Wildlife Habitat Judging Contest. Mr. Hense taught us about the animals we need to memorize for the contest, the food they eat, what they need to survive, and many other things. Mrs. West showed us a list of what we need to memorize, different types of fruits and vegetables, and what we can expect at the Horticulture Judging Contest. Meanwhile, the Cloverbuds made some beautiful key hangers with Mrs. Hense! I learned a lot about these interesting contests in this meeting!
Country Clovers
The Country Clovers are excited to welcome several new families to our 4-H family. We are preparing projects to enter in the Delaware State Fair; our February and March projects were woodworking. At the February meeting we worked very hard on sanding and staining the wood. Then, at the March meeting we carefully nailed the project together, trying not to hit our fingernails. Tori and Danielle were very excited to participate in the State Horse Bowl Contest. Hailey and Connor did amazing in our County Photography contest, and are focusing on preparing for the state fair as well. Madison and Kaitlyn are currently studying for the Poultry Judging Contest while Blake is readily awaiting the Tractor Driving contest and the Archery Contest. Our next meeting will be held April 6 at 6 P.M.
Sewing Group Update
Sussex County had 18 youth that complete lesson 1 and lesson 2 together with our sewing team; during Lesson 1 they learned the parts of a sewing machine, how to thread the sewing machine, wind a bobbin, sew a straight lines and pivot corners with expertise. While completing Lesson 2, everyone reviewed accurately pivoting corners, and then successfully threaded the sewing machine. Each participant had the chance to select a material and make a pillow that they will have a chance to enter in the Fashion Showcase or the state fair. It took the youth by surprise when they realized there is much more to sewing a pillow than just sewing & stuffing it! The youth learned what pinking shears were and about how to pink seam allowances in order to avoid the fabric from fraying. They also learned to snip corners, turn corners right side out and finally…… the challenge with stuffing the corners. Who knew corners were so important! Then, the students found the most challenging part was hand sewing the pillow shut so the judges wouldn’t see the stitches. Everyone worked very hard and was very excited to see their completed pillows!

Clover Knights – Ashlyn Elliott, Reporter
Happy Spring everyone! Due to the weather on the 14th, our meeting was rescheduled for March 21. President Lenhart started off the meeting by reminding our members of the many fun events and happenings that are coming up. She shared registration deadlines and details of the events, and encouraged everyone to attend. Congratulations to all our members that participated in the Favorite Foods competition and the Horse Bowl. Several members shared about their experiences in attending those events. Tommy McCabe also shared with everyone about the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser that he attended and helped out with. The meeting was shortened this month, due to a special archery training by Mr. Bo. Archery training was given to those members in attendance. Mr. Bo also reminded everyone of the archery shoots that were remaining for this year. The Clover Knights next meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 11 at 6pm. So until then, be sure to get outdoors and enjoy all things 4H!

On Thursday March 16th the Bridgeville Mustangs 4-H meeting was brought to order by co-president Jenna Anger. The secretary and treasurer’s report was read and approved. Then we sang a song and Cole Carpenter gave a safety report about keeping warm in the cold weather. We talked about old business and members gave reports on that. New business was discussed. C.J. read a thank you note from the church thanking us for donating food and supplies to the food pantry each month. This month we donated cereal and canned goods to the food pantry. Snack was served and the two men shared their stories about their childhood, bad choices drug addiction, and not to do what they have done in life. The meeting was then adjourned.
While our meeting was going on the cloverbuds were busy propagating African violets for the fair. They also had two special guests come. Two bunnies. The cloverbuds were able to hold and play with them.
Everyone had a great time at the March Mustang meeting!!
