Statewide 4-H Ice Skating Fun – Saturday, December 27
Need something to do during Christmas break? Plan on attending the Statewide 4-H Ice Skating Party at the Centre Ice Rink in Harrington, DE on Saturday, December 27 from 10:15-11:45 am. Admission is $3 per person and a canned good, which includes skate rental, if needed. 4-H members are allowed to bring a friend, even if they are not in 4-H, but they are responsible for their guest at this event. What a great opportunity to renew old 4-H friendships throughout the state. And if you get hungry, the snack bar will be open for everyone wishing to purchase food. Donated canned goods will be taken to the local food pantry.

Delmarvalous Quilters wants to partner with Sussex County 4-H!
Did you know that a group of ladies called the Delmarvalous Quilters meet each month at the REC?  They work on a variety of projects and have a strong interest in working with our Sussex County 4-H youth.  Some examples of projects they would like to work on with our youth are:

Charity Quilts and Quilts of Valor.  All fabric for these projects is donated.  This group is looking forward to mentoring 4-H youth and possibly collaborating with our Sewing Workshops in the future.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Jill Jackson at 856-7303 or jackson@udel.edu

With winter activities come winter weather and the possibility of cancellations.  The following are ways we notify the public of weather-related cancellations and postponements:

• Notify WMDT and WBOC.  We distinguish ourselves as Carvel Research and Education Center.  UD announcements that do not mention Carvel, such as Del Tech Campus, do not include our facility.
• A message will be left on 302-856-7303
• A message will be posted on our main Carvel website
• Notice will be posted on the Delaware 4-H Facebook page.  This will also feed directly into the Sussex County 4-H webpage.  You do not need Facebook to see the announcement feed

Honey Bee Essay Contest – Due February 1, 2015.
The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc. is again sponsoring the 2015 4-H Honey Bee Essay Contest. This contest is open to all active 4-H Club members. The topic of the essay for this year is “Planting for Bees from Backyards and Up”. Any 4-H member interested in writing an essay may do so and submit it to the State 4-H Office no later than February 1st. Scholarships Available

• Wild Turkey Federation Scholarships due December 19
  Applications for the Wild Turkey Federation Scholarship are due January 1st and are available online at www.nwtf.org/jakes/scholarships.html. Special instructions for Delaware 4-H’ers can be found on the State 4-H website. Applications should be sent to local chapters. We have a paper copy available at the 4-H office. 4-H members involved in the 4-H Shooting Sports program are excellent candidates for these awards
• Agriculture Scholarship due February 1, 2015
  Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, the program provides $1,500 college scholarships to students pursuing a degree related to agriculture. • Delaware Farm Bureau Scholarship due April 2015
  There is a $2500 scholarship opportunity for 4-H’ers whose family is a member of the Delaware Farm Bureau. This will be awarded to a college bound student who is pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field. Deadline is April 2015.
