Agent Letter: October 2014

Dear Sussex 4-H Family,
Fall has finally arrived and brought many 4-H activities!  October 4-H Events include:  National 4-H Week, Window Display Contest, Archery Shoot, Pumpkin Contest & Haunted Trail and the Fall Retreat.
Please be sure to read all the posts in the newsletter and be sure to mark your calendars with all of the exciting 4-H activities!
Leaders – Please be sure to forward all emails from the 4-H Office to your club members.  With the    4-H year just starting, we do not have all contact information and do not want any members missing out on opportunities!

In Tune with 4-H was the theme for the Achievement Event held on September 27th.  Over one hundred fifty people enjoyed the covered dish dinner and awards presentations.  We added a fun twist this year with interactive camp songs incorporated throughout the night!  The 4-H melody sounded sweeter with each award given.  Pam Eskridge, Stateline 4-H Club Leader, was presented with the Joy Sparks Spirit of 4-H Award.  Sussex 2014 National 4-H Club Congress delegates are:  Colleen Anderson and Nathaniel Vincent.  Mikayla Ockels was the third Sussex 4-H member to receive the Diamond Clover Award.  Sussex 4-H also presented the 4-H Sprit Award to six very deserving individuals.  Congratulations to all the award recipients! More details about the program can be found further in the newsletter.

As many of you know, Mark Manno, Delaware 4-H Program Leader, passed away on September 13. In Delaware, he served as the New Castle County Extension Agent , County Extension Director, Grant Extension Specialist and most recently as the State 4-H Program Leader.  Mark was extremely successful in his ability to identify, write, and secure grants for many outstanding programs that were offered to youth in Delaware as well as those from other states and countries.  During his 40 years in this profession, Mark impacted the lives of thousands of youth in 4-H.   Mark was always ready with new ideas and encouraged 4-H members from across the state to “Make the Best Better!”  His dedication to 4-H was more than a career obligation – it was a way of life.

Fall is a time of to reflect on the past and look forward to the future!  I encourage all members, leaders, and volunteers to try new things both inside and outside of 4-H.  Participate in new events, make new friends, volunteer, market 4-H, and invite a friend to become a 4-H member.  You never know how much you will like something until you try it!

Looking forward to seeing you at the next 4-H event!

Yours in 4-H,
Jill Jackson
