September 2014 – Agent Letter

Dear Sussex 4-H Family,

Welcome to a new 4-H year!  There are lots of exciting activities and events to look forward to.  Coming up in September we have an Archery Training/Shoot, Coastal Cleanup, and our annual Achievement Celebration.  We also welcome new clubs to Sussex County:  4-Hoofbeats, Dairy Club, and Laurel Sparks.  Our county program is growing and we are excited to meet new members, leaders, and families!

On a somber note, as many of you know, Barbara Taylor passed away on August 18.  Mrs. Taylor was a lifelong 4-H’er.  She loved every aspect of 4-H and always promoted the Sussex County 4-H program.  Barbara founded the Seaford Blue Jays, was a member of the Order of the Links, and also played a huge part in developing Younger Member Weekend.  She helped numerous Sussex 4-H members with their National 4-H Congress books, making sure everything was just right before submitting.  Mrs. Taylor hardly ever missed a 4-H event and could tell you dates, names, awards given of many 4-H members over the last 40 years.  Just a few weeks ago, Barbara was excited to learn that she is a laureate to the Delaware 4-H Hall of Fame and will be inducted in October.  She was a great source of knowledge and 4-H history and will be missed.

4-H Staff Update:  Tammy Schirmer, our wonderful 4-H administrative assistant, will be out of the office from September 11 through October 1.  In her absence, please contact myself, Rita Lofland, or Kaitlin Klair with any questions or to sign up for events and activities.

Thank you to the clubs who submit a club reports each month, please keep them coming!  Be sure to submit your club news to Tammy or myself by the 25th of each month.  Include a fun activity, projects completed, and photos of your club in actions.  We love to see and share what each club is doing!

Please feel free to call, email, or visit my office if you have any new ideas, suggestions, or concerns about Sussex 4-H programming.  I would also like to schedule times to visit each club at a monthly meeting.  This will help me learn more about what you are doing outside of county-wide events.  Organizational Leaders, please send your club meeting date, time, and location to me (jackson@udel.edu).  Let’s start another year focusing on what 4-H is all about, Making the Best Better!

Yours in 4-H,

Jill Jackson
