Managing Back to School Stress

Bonus Activity: Discuss these tips and tricks to Manage Back to School Stress

1.      Establish routines: Start a back to school-year routine with a healthy bedtime and healthy wake up time.

2.      Talk about feelings: Talk to your parent, guardian or trusted adult about your concerns and feelings.

3.      Create a positive environment: A positive home and learning environment can reduce stress and anxiety. Set up a good place to do your homework and a good place to chill at home.

4.      Set realistic expectations: Celebrate your efforts and set up realistic priorities for your school  year.

5.      Find something to look forward to: Find something you’re excited about, such as an extracurricular activity, sport or after school club.

6.      Practice calming activities: Creative activities like drawing or painting, reading a favorite book, or playing a board game can help you feel less anxious. You can also practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing or yoga

Healthy Snack:                                                           

Based on a Healthy Plate

Simple Ingredients:

  • Greek Yogurt
  • Mixed Berries
  • Handful Almonds
  • A Drizzle of Honey

A snack that includes all healthy plate ingredients could be a small bowl of Greek yogurt with mixed berries, a handful of almonds, and a drizzle of honey, as it provides protein from the yogurt, fiber and vitamins from the berries, and healthy fats from the almonds

Movement Activity:

A Relay Challenge

Materials: Cones and Batons (can be paper towel tubes with colored tape)

Create 2 Teams: Red and Blue

Set up: 8-12 cones lined up on opposite sides of the room

Objective: Pass the baton and be the first team to finish!

  • Form lines behind all the cones based on color groups
  • There should be an equal number of kids from the other color group lined up on opposite sides
  • Give 1 baton to each color team
  • 3-2-1 Go, Have kids cycle through sprinting to the opposite cone and passing the baton to the next runner
  • Continue running until each kid has had at least a few turns
  • You can also add in a few reps of skipping, etc
