Club News: March 2023

Hollymount – Gianna Joella, Reporter

At our February Hollymount meeting, we held our own Favorite Foods Contest! After our usual singing and dancing and our business meeting, those participating in the contest set their dishes and table settings up at the front of the room. Those who were not participating in the Favorite Foods Contest began to work on a table setting poster in the meantime. Once they were set up, everyone joined back together. We learned all about the participants’ dishes, menus, category, and place settings. There was even a mock interview held for each contestant! There were so many interesting dishes, and hearing each members’ thoughts on what they enjoyed about the process was interesting. After we finished our posters, we even got to try all of the dishes. This meeting was a great way for contestants and those interested in the contest to learn more about the real Favorite Foods Contest, and we were able to try many new dishes!

Our February club meeting began with our Old and New Business being listed by Vice President Carter Bradley.  At the recent Delaware 4-H Indoor Archery Championships, Lexington Chisenhall won the Delaware 4-H Barebow Junior Title with a score of 270 out of 300. He also won USA Archery Delaware Indoor National Barebow Male. He shot 30 arrows for the 4H competition and 60 arrows for the JOAD competition. He’s fourth in the nation! Congrats to Juliette Anger and Gideon Quackenbush on their wins, too.

Several of our club members participated in the County Public Speaking Contest. Congratulations to Carter Bradley for winning Senior Division and moving on to the State Fair. The members participating in the upcoming Favorite Foods Contest shared what they are making, and everyone wished them good luck. After the meeting, the leaders of the Wild Clovers Outdoor Club gave a presentation on Bird Migration. Fun Fact: There are three different ways for birds to migrate: Longitudinal, Latitudinal, and Altitudinal. Longitudinal means flying East and West to migrate, Latitudinal means going North to South, and Altitudinal means going up or down in elevation (think mountain areas). After the presentation, we made bird feeders with edible glue, bird seed, and an upside-down flowerpot. A very fun meeting, and I am looking forward to the next one!

During our February meeting, we first had the monthly business meeting. During this, our club president informed us of what 4-H events are going on and what is coming up. After the business meeting, we did an activity to help the club with judging. There were 4 stations that each gave us a piece of a bigger puzzle that we got by figuring out certain judging material. Once you were done a station, we got the puzzle piece and once everyone was done, the whole club came together and put the puzzle together. We also did a place setting activity to help our members prepare for Favorite Foods.

Cypress Heart and Hands
The members in Cypress Heart and Hands had a fun-filled February! For our Tray Favors, we crafted heart thumbprint magnets. The kids had a blast mixing the different colors and stamping their fingerprints! At our club meeting, the kids seemed interested in the upcoming events and expressed interest in training sessions next year to prepare for them. We learned the Eskimo song and added the coloring page to our song binders. Two of our club members provided snack and an activity. We made painted rock hearts and ate popcorn and even popped it ourselves! For our community service this month, we made 30 birthday kits to donate to our local food pantries. We made the cards, decorated the bags and put together all of the supplies to make a birthday cake.

Wild Clovers Outdoor Club
The Wild Clovers had a fabulous February! We had 12 participants attend our club meeting, including many new faces! This month, we learned all about how different animals prepare for wintertime. We learned about raccoons, deer, birds, and squirrels all while sharing a few animal jokes and puns. Afterwards, we made our own bird feeders to help our feathered friends that stick around during the cold months. The Wild Clovers visited our friends over at the Bridgeville Mustangs for some outstanding outreach. We shared information about migratory birds and crafted a reusable terra cotta pot bird feeder. We made an appearance at the Favorite Foods contest where we did a little fundraising and allowed kids from across the county to start their own bee balm seeds to take home. Our next meeting is March 13th at the REC building from 6:30-8:00. This is our Camping 101 course which is necessary if you plan on attending our summer camping trip!
