Club News: April 2022

Our February Club meeting was held at the American Legion. Our club health advisors, Embry and Paloma, gave instructions how to make a healthy fruit salad snack. President Seth reminded us of upcoming in person events like the rescheduled Winter Fun Day and Favorite Foods. Caydance and Zipporah led the club in making Valentine’s Day canvas paintings using clothes pins, pompoms, and tape. Everyone’s paintings turned out great and very unique to their style!

Our March Club meeting, at the American Legion, was a lot of fun. We welcomed two new members, Raina and Cora. Our club discussed upcoming projects, the flower boxes will be planted and a watering schedule made in the spring to last through the summer at Lofland Nursing home. We plan to decorate a litter barrel again to be placed at the Jay’s Nest Park. The American Legion has invited us to participate in upcoming events for Memorial Day like placing flags in cemeteries and helping with parade events. Ellie led the club making paper shamrocks, perfect for St. Patrick’s Day!

At this month’s meeting we started off with the business meeting talking about the upcoming sign-ups and events. First, we made cat toys for the SPCA by braiding felt string pieces. Next, we started to brainstorm ideas for a team building activity where we had to get a marble from one square to another without the marble touching the ground, and the structure had to be self-powered. We had 50 minutes to complete our structures within our groups and were given random materials. In the end, some groups had them done, but others did not. Mrs. Dana hopes that the next time we can have some different materials and a different task.

The meeting was held on March 10, 2022, at the Allen’s barn. The meeting was called to order at 7:06 p.m. and we started by saying the pledges, which were led by Anna, Seth, and Evan. Next, we talked about upcoming camps and other important events. Then, we put together baskets full of goodies to be given to the Bridgeville and Greenwood Police Departments and another basket for the Bridgeville Fire Department. Also, we put candy in miniature pots of gold and wrote thinking of you notes that would be given to a nursing home in Greenwood. Last, we propagated plants that we can put in the Fair. We are looking forward to a craft day in April at the Marquez’s house where we will make crafts to be entered in the Fair. Our next meeting will be held on April 14, 2022.

At our March meeting we welcomed new members, Rebekah, Bailey, and Leah, to our club.  We talked about upcoming County 4H events, and had members share about some of those events.  Instead of doing a project this month, we reviewed the 2022 State Fair Premium Book and talked about how to enter exhibits for State Fair.  Our older members shared examples and tips with our newer and younger members.

After our meeting, we all pitched in to clean the church hall and decorate for Easter.  Each month we do a cleaning task for the church to thank them for letting us use the building for our meetings.

Lord Baltimore Helping Hands 4-H club met on Sunday, March 13th, 2022. The meeting began with the 4-H pledge and the pledge of allegiance. We then went over the old business, such as the public speaking contest and Winter Fun Day, as well as new business, like Favorite Foods, the equine art contest, the judging contests, and upcoming camps. For our dog project, we decided we would all do a poster relating to dogs and we planned to meet on the 18th to visit the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Next, we did a demonstration on how much sugar is in certain foods and drinks, allowing us to learn about nutrition labels and how to read them. We ended the meeting by doing our craft for the Meals On Wheels group, which were four-leaf clovers with hats and faces. This concluded Lord Baltimore Helping Hands March meeting.

Our 4-H club met again on Friday, March 18th, at the SPCA. Here we were given a tour of the facilities were able to donate our blankets from the January meeting. This opportunity allowed us to learn how the dogs are placed in certain areas and how, if they have issues of any kind, are handled. Another fact learned was that Delaware is a no-kill state, meaning they have a saving rate of 90% or higher, so many animals are brought to Delaware shelters to be given a better chance of adoption and life. Overall, the opportunity allowed us to learn more about the animals we are doing our project on in a fun way.
