Sussex County 4-H hosted its first Experience Extension Day Camp June 24-28 at the Carvel Research and Education Center. 25 youth ages 8-12 were in attendance. Campers got to experience all extension has to offer including a Hand Washing demonstration from Family and Consumer Science Agent Nancy Mears, pulling out strawberry DNA with Plant Pathologist, Dr. Alyssa Koehler, sweeping for bugs in a soybean field with Dr. David Owens, Entomologist, as well as various other activities. At the end of the week, campers were put into groups and gave a presentation about Extension to their peers, parents, and extension professionals. Families ended the week with a sweet treat from UD’s own Moo Mobile. We look forward to getting prepared for next year’s camp with many more exciting activities and opportunities! “Come fly with me let fly, let’s fly away!” This year’s Georgetown Day Camp was another huge success. ‘Around the World’ was our camp theme and throughout the week our 60 campers got to explore all different areas of 4-H; from Food Science to Computer Science, the youth involved were engaged in many activities. In addition to these classes, campers got to hear from Delaware Health and Human Services about their BLAST Lyme Disease campaign, learned about Healthy Relationship presented by State Teen Council officers Maci Carter and Rachel Taylor, and got to do hands-on computer science activities led by Mrs. Jenny Trunfio, Kent County 4-H staff. Campers ended the week with a traditional Council Circle where they sang songs and performed group skits for their parents.
