Club News: February 2019

Lucky Leaf 4-H – Ashley Romanowski, Reporter
Hello everyone! Our last meeting was very busy! I hope everyone had fun! The Little Creek Clovers did a fun snowman project. The older kids did a project book check over to see how they worked and if they had any questions. We had two birthdays, Miss Chelsea and Murphy. We discussed the upcoming events: the Winter Fun Day Jan.12,the Spaghetti Dinner tickets/the Auction Jan.23rd , and the public speaking contest on January 26. Registrations are due by January 7.  Also, health challenge pins were given out to all members who participated in the challenge .Thank you and awesome job! Some kids in our club went to the 4H ice skating place. I hope they had a good time ! Also , we shared ideas for the community service project including making cookies for Delmar’s First Responders. The meeting was concluded with a healthy snack from Elise and Noel Garde. The next meeting is Thursday, February 7, 2019.

Hollymount – Gianna Joella, Reporter
We began our meeting with a discussion about past and upcoming business. Upcoming business includes the quickly-approaching Public Speaking Contest, and the Spaghetti Dinner and Basket Auction. Many generous businesses have been donating items for Hollymount’s basket; the winner will be very lucky! Once our business meeting concluded, we split into groups for multiple photography workshops. We were given information about each station, grabbed our cameras, and started taking pictures. The first station my group visited was a portrait station; we stood in front of a wall with great lighting, and a member of our group took our pictures. Next, we moved on to a station lined with an abundance of gorgeous flowers. We took turns picking a good lineup of flowers, placing them on a black background, and taking their pictures. Multiple boxes of crayons sat on the table of the next station for closeup pictures. We took turns arranging them into creative designs. This station was extremely helpful for me— I learned how to take clear closeup pictures, not blurry ones! The next station was the most interesting, in my opinion: the special effects station. One member of the group would sit on a chair while another carefully lined up a pair of boots with the first member’s feet. We looked like we had huge feet in the resulting picture! We then moved onto our final station. One member would lay on a blanket on the floor while another stood on a stepstool and took a picture from above. I really enjoyed this station; it was exciting to climb up on the stool! Finally, the members that would be attending the Favorite Foods Contest were given a presentation on information to prepare them for the contest. This was one of my favorite meetings in all my 4-H years; we did so many activities! I wish good luck to the members that will be submitting their photos to the Graphic Arts Contest or the State Fair.

On January 11, 2019 the Country Clovers had their first meeting of the New Year. During the meeting we talked about the current 4-H events that are going on. Ms. Jen also brought back awards from the Leaders Meeting for all the Hippology participants who won them. Miss Debbie also brought 3-D pens for the kids and they were able to create letters and cool shapes like surfboards or flowers. The other kids were able to finish up on the peanut reindeer, snowman, and Santa. All in all, it was a fun day.

Harbor Lights – Kate Cunningham, Reporter

The Harbor Lights 4H club last met on January 14, 2019. After the meeting, a few of our members performed their speeches for Public Speaking to the club. All of the speeches were very interesting and informative, and funny. Everyone in our club is so excited to perform speeches and cheer on our fellow members of 4H at the contest. After we finished our speeches, we enjoyed a snack and a demonstration of what Favorite Foods will be like by our club president. Several people in our club will be making dishes to bring to the contest. We are all very excited to participate in all the upcoming events that 4-H has to offer.

Clover Knights – Abby Frost, Reporter
Happy January everyone!  Things got back to routine for the Clover Knights, as they kicked off the new year with their first club meeting on Tuesday, January 15.  We had 6 new guests join us for our meeting and to learn about 4-H, and hopefully will be welcoming them back next month as new Clover Knights members.

The meeting began with the business portion, in which we thanked the many members and parents who helped out with all the community outreach items we completed over the holidays.  Those items include; Caroling on The Circle, canned food drive, annual cookie exchange and then donating cookies to DSP Troop 4, making cards for the nursing home, caroling at the Harrison House, adopting a local family from Georgetown for Christmas, and participating in the Georgetown Christmas parade. It was a very busy time for everyone, but we all enjoyed being able to give back to our community, and especially helping those less fortunate.  I think it’s safe to say, the Clover Knights finished 2018 very strong, and are looking forward to everything in store for us in 2019.

With Autism Awareness Day having just passed, our presentation/project portion of the meeting centered around Autism Awareness.  For this, we welcomed our club’s very own Mrs. Noel Lenhart, who gave a presentation about autism and what it means to be autistic.  Our members then made sensory bottles, which will be getting donated to the Indian River School District for use in the classrooms of autistic students.  We wrapped up the meeting with snacks and had a few of our members share exciting news that has been happening with them.  The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 12 at 6:15pm.   Till next month!

Lower DE Archers  – Riley Osborne, Reporter
Hi! This is Riley again with the third report from the Lower Delaware Archery club, it has been freezing the past few days. But luckily we have finally made it into a safe little hide away that lets us shoot inside a building. We give a BIG thank you to the Bay Shore church for letting us use their building for the winter! The club is growing every week, and now when we start outdoor shooting again we will have 16 lanes to shoot on. Last week we did not have practice because it snowed and this upcoming weekend the 26th and 27th is the Lancaster Archery Classic.  Therefore, that weekend we will not have archery taking place.  If you are in the competition the information such as how many people are in your category and what lane you will be in is all online at the same website you signed up on. We have decided to host the first annual Delaware 4-H archery shoot on March 30. We have a new big rule for the competition, everyone is required to wear a quiver on the side of the body. For the prizes the first place winners will have a pin to put on their quiver, medals will be given for second and third place, the other archers will receive a ribbon for any other place. The event will be on a Saturday and it is an all day event. We need parents to help with concession stands. There will also be three time frames: beginners, juniors, and seniors.  The event will only be open to members of an active 4-H club with an archery project.  We may bring in a few clubs a week before that do not know the rules of shooting indoors so they can learn. We will be having a two minute timer for three arrows like all competitions. In two weeks, we will be having another fun event, a snowball fight archery style!  From now on, our Sunday practices we will have the club president, Madison, help us stretch before we shoot so the muscles in our arms and back do not get sore. We also had our very FIRST Robin Hood for indoor shooting!! Go Carley!

Seaford Blue Jays – Ivy Genshaw, Reporter
For the December meeting, the Seaford Blue Jays 4-H club met at Acts retirement home in Seaford. We sang many Christmas carols which everyone enjoyed. After we sang, we held a small party where we had refreshments. We did a Secret Santa gift exchange where everyone was eager to give their gift. Next, we discussed all the events we had attended. Many of us attended the mega adoption event for the SPCA at the fairgrounds in Harrington. We enjoyed getting to walk and love on all the adorable animals.  We also discussed how we rang bells for the Salvation Army and how much we enjoyed getting together to earn money for those who are in need, which we all had a great time at. Afterward, we gathered for pizza at Alfredo’s.  Previously, we had bought presents which The Good Old Boys gave us $500 dollars for to spend on a local family that needed a little help during the Christmas season. We always are looking to help others and this was a great opportunity for our club.  Our club is excited to help more people in the 2019 year.

After the holidays, the Seaford Blue Jays enjoyed getting together for our February meeting.  We started the meeting off by telling each other what Christmas gift was our favorite. Then we discussed our theme for our club’s Spaghetti Dinner Auction basket. After a lot of thought we finally decided and cannot wait to reveal it the night of.  Next, we talked about the ice skating party that was held at the Harrington Ice Skating Rink.  A couple of people in our club attended and had a great time. Then we talked about fundraisers we could do in 2019.  When the meeting was over, we did a few fun activities.  Alyssa Thawley, our club president, led us in a foods game. Each member tried to guess which food had the most calories. The results were surprising and we learned a great deal about calories. Caydance Means, our club hostess, told us what foods are and are not safe for dogs..  We learned that many foods for humans are not safe for dogs to eat. She shared a dog treat recipe with us that contains pumpkin and oats. We all enjoyed making them.  Everyone was able to take treats home for their dogs.  Finally, we ate a healthy snack and said good bye till we see each other next month.

Bridgeville Mustangs- Paige Taylor, Reporter
Hello everyone! To begin our January meeting, all Exploring 4-H members met for their monthly meeting. They all chose a topic out of a hat to write a mini Public Speaking prompt. They had 15 minutes to prepare a 5-sentence speech that could’ve been from the following topics: Vacation, Animal, Food, or favorite Sport or Activity. Moving on to our Mustangs project group meetings, Kyle Kerr and Rachel Carey attended Cooking 101. Lillie Bradley also attended Arts and Crafts. Our club also has an Arts and Crafts for kids 12 years and older which Carley DeFord, Riley Taylor, Amanda Jewell, and Austin Jewell attended. Madison Wells and Taylor Young attended a project group meeting run by our very own Erin and Meredith Carey called Science Stuff. Alexia Carroll attended Junior Council. Finally, Austin Jewell, Taylor Young, and several others attended the State Ice Skating Party. After the meeting was over, our health leaders taught us some yoga moves. I think everyone had a great time at our 2018-2019 January meeting!
