Seaford Blue Jays – Ivy Genshaw, Reporter
The Seaford Blue Jays met on September 11, 2018, at the Seaford Public Library. We elected Club Offecers for the 2018-2019 year. They are as follows: President- Alyssa Thawley, Vice President-Jake Shultie, Treasurer-Seth Genshaw, Secretary-Janet Shultie, Reporter-Ivy Genshaw. Our club also discussed and reviewed our bi-laws and club requirements. Everyone was encouraged to register as soon as possible online. We decided on entering a window display to show “inspiring kids what to do”. We met at the library and and put our display together. We did not place in the top 3 but we were excited about how our display came together with photo clouds, lights, and movement. It is being displayed at the Seaford Public Library where we hope it inspires and educates those who see it to learn about 4H and join our great organization. Next, we talked about community service opportunities and all the 4-H club groups that are available for us to participate and join in. This meeting ended with a fun club craft supplied by the leader, Mrs. Henderson. We took a roll of toilet paper and wrapped a hand towel around it and topped it with cinnamon sticks and leaves to create a pumpkin.
In October we met on the 9th. Our club leader, Ms. Jacalyn Bradley, handed back all our General and Project Books that had been graded. We discussed the Awards Banquet and the individual awards that members in our club received. Old business was Coastal Cleanup. We had a nice turnout and helped to make the Williams Pond Park trash free. New business was the upcoming Pumpkin Contest and International Foods. We voted on volunteering to help the local Salvation Army Branch. We are going to donate chili to their soup kitchen. Our members were encouraged to stop by Tractor Supply to support the Paper Clover Campaign. We talked about club fundraisers and our members donated money to purchase gift cards for our college members to let them know we are thinking about them. After the meeting Alyssa Thawley told us about germs. We discussed how the flu in much worse than an ordinary cold and how to prevent it from spreading. She did a hand washing exercise where hands were placed under a special light to show if we had washed them thoroughly. Finally we enjoyed a healthy snack of fruits and vegetables.

Our October 2018 meeting was definitely an active one! To start out, we each brought a towel or a yoga mat and did yoga with an instructor. I did poses I didn’t even know existed! The session was very relaxing and definitely persuaded me to do yoga much more often.
To cool down after our workout, the people who could not attend the Achievement Ceremony were given their awards. There were SO many pins and certificates! I can’t believe how talented our members are. Congratulations to everybody that was given an award and keep up the good work!
Next, while the Cloverbuds were hard at work making Meals on Wheels tray favors, we were given a presentation on self-image. The activities for this presentation involved discussing relationships and stating things we liked about ourselves. It was very interesting, and I hope to have more deliveries like that in the future. When the presentation had concluded, the rest of the members joined the Cloverbuds and helped them make the rest of the tray favors. They were cute little penguins made from pieces of egg cartons, and I believe we made about 150 in total! That’s a lot of penguins. At least our arms got workouts!
To conclude, this meeting definitely made us all feel great about ourselves through receiving awards, making tray favors for charity, and learning more about self-love and self-imagine!

Lord Baltimore Helping Hands had their October meeting on October 7, 2018. We began the meeting with the two pledges. Next, we did our health portion of the meeting by going outside and playing a game that makes us talk to others. This helps with mental health. We then went inside and talked about the award ceremony. Also, the programming night two of our members went to. The next discussion was about the upcoming events like the pumpkin contest. All of this happened when we still participated in the health portion of 4-H by eating a delicious pumpkin sauce with pretzels and ginger snaps. The meeting ended with a craft. Today we decorated pill bottles like pumpkins for the meals on wheels. We are hoping that someday we might be able to help with the dinners the meals on wheels have. These are the events of Lord Baltimore Helping Hands October meeting.

The October 1, 2018 meeting started off with a presentation by Sussex County’s Healthy Living Ambassador, Kyle Morris. The title of the presentation was “Build Your Ship”. His presentation addressed the topic of healthy relationships for teens; most specifically, dating relationships. The council members learned that there are two types of relationships- healthy relationships and toxic relationships. Kyle asks the members to name different characteristics of a healthy relationships. Examples shared were- being understanding, respecting boundaries, being supportive. Kyle then asks the members to share characteristics of a toxic relationship; examples given were- cheating, showing selfish behavior, and being controlling. All of the Junior Council members participated in the educational games guided by the speaker. Kyle wrapped up session by having club members write down additional feelings they have about healthy and toxic relationships on sticky notes. The sticky notes are posted on the board and discussed within the group. Kyle also shared tips for safely communicating on social media. WOW, building a healthy relationship as a teenager can be very challenging and requires a lot of thought!
