JOY SPARKS SPIRIT OF 4-H AWARD
The Joy Sparks Award is given in memory of Joy G. Sparks, past State 4-H Program Leader. Joy was a lifelong 4-H member. She embodied what it meant to be a 4-H’er and used her Head, Heart, Hands and Health to better herself and her community. Award recipients are chosen based on their contributions to the 4-H program and keeping Joy’s Spirit of 4-H alive.
This year’s winner was Sharon Anderson. Mrs. Anderson was chosen for this award because of and her continued involvement and dedication to 4-H activities as a volunteer leader.
Sharon’s first 4-H leadership role was as the Cloverbud Leader of Hollymount 4-H Club. She then became the organizational leader of Hollymount from 2006-2016. Sharon is currently the co-Leader of the Sussex 4-H Dairy Club. Sharon has a genuine interest in youth. She has a warm smile and caring personality which make her a wonderful leader. She helped promote 4-H through window displays, walking in parades, community service, and mentoring youth.
Sharon is a member of the 4-H Leaders’ Association where she has served as the Secretary as well as the Chairperson for the Fall Retreat and Talent Show. She has been the nurse for many overnight/weekend county events. She is also a member of the Sussex County Order of the Links. Thanks to Sharon’s wonderful leadership, the Hollymount 4-H Club has become known for their community service projects. The club has participated in projects such as Beach Clean-ups, Adopt-a-Beach, Relay for Life, Food Basket Drives, making Meals on Wheels Tray Favors. What wonderful ways for the club members to give back to their community!
For seven years, Sharon helped present Leadership trainings to Sussex teens at Jr. Leader Weekend. These leadership sessions were based on the books, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork by John C. Maxwell. Each year, the teens come away from the weekend learning important life skills and were encouraged to use the laws in their everyday lives.
Sharon is always willing to lend a hand and has a lot of great ideas and input! Please join me in thanking Sharon Anderson for her dedication to Sussex County 4-H. There is little doubt that Sharon will continue to inspire “To Make the Best Better.”
FRIEND OF 4-H AWARD
The Friend of 4-H Award is given to businesses, organizations, and individuals that promote youth development and help Sussex 4-H attain their goals and objectives.
The recipient of the 2018 Friend of 4-H Award is Representative Harvey Kenton.
Representative Kenton has been a long-time supporter of our Delaware 4-H program. He has attended numerous 4-H events in Sussex and Kent County. Rep. Kenton was seen every year at our annual Legislative Day event supporting our 4-H members. As a representative, he has been a strong advocate for youth (in both 4-H and FFA) at Legislative Hall and at the Delaware State Fair, where he is a director. He has also served as a judge for the State 4-H Public Speaking Contest for many years.
Representative Kenton never hesitates to attend 4-H events in Sussex and Kent Counties. Whether he helps hand out awards at Achievement Events or attends the Spaghetti Dinner & Auction or the Kent Basket Auction, he is always there with a smile on his face and a lends a hand wherever needed.
Delaware 4-H truly appreciates this partnership! We thank Representative Harvey Kenton for his time and talents both as a Representative for our state and as an advocate for our 4-H program. We wish him well in his retirement!

4-H SPIRIT AWARDS
Four years ago, we incorporated the Sussex 4-H Spirit Awards into our program. The 4-H Spirit Awards are similar to those given at State 4-H Camp. Recipients will be awarded for how they represented the 4 H’s (Head, Heart, Hands, Health) and 4-H Spirit throughout the year. 5 youth and one adult will receive this award each year. This year’s winners were: Ruby DiSabatino, Zane Adams, Emma Sparpaglione, Kyle Morris, Kylee Reynolds and Jodie Gravenor.
The Head award recipient was Ruby DiSabatino. Ruby used her knowledge of 4-H projects and activities to excel in a variety of areas in and out of 4-H. She also strengthened her leadership skills by helping new and younger members become more involved in her club and encouraged them to attend county events. Ruby is becoming more active each year and we definitely see her becoming a great leader!
Zane Adams received the Heart Award. This young man has participated in a variety of events at the local and county levels. Whenever Zane attends events, he is always smiling and willing to help in any way he can. He has become a wonderful leader at Younger Member Weekend and Day Camp. Anyone can tell that Zane loves 4-H.
The Hands Award was presented to Emma Sparpaglione for her hard work and dedication at the club and county levels. She takes pride in learning new things and achieving her goals. Emma has been a wonderful Exchange Group delegate helping at every event. Emma is a wonderful leader and she is always willing to lend a hand with a smile on her face.
The Health Award went to Kyle Morris. I have watched this young man become a great leader. Whether helping at Jr. Council events, the Spaghetti Dinner or Day Camp, Kyle is always willing to help wherever needed. He is also a Healthy Living Ambassador and encourages other members to make healthy choices.
Kylee Reynolds received the Member Spirit Award. This young woman is a leader within her club, Cozy Critters. Throughout the year, Kylee has attended almost every county event. As a member of a fairly new club, she then takes information to her club about the events and her experiences. Kylee is always cheerful and takes in each and every experience 4-H has to offer!
Last but not least was the Adult Spirit Award. Jodie Gravenor has been a valuable asset to Sussex 4-H for many years. She is always willing to help wherever she can and works well with a variety of members and leaders. Jodie is an active member of both the Leaders and Links. She helps out at county events such as Pumpkin Contest, Winter Fun Day and the Spaghetti Dinner. Jodie has been an excellent club leader of Cypress Heart & Hands for many years, always making her members feel comfortable and encouraging them to try new things.
Congratulations to all our award winners!
