2018 Delaware State Fair – July 19-28

state fairThe Delaware State Fair is just around the corner and excitement is building as 4-H members get ready to exhibit and showcase their 4-H project work. The 4-H Department Handbook is now available on the Delaware State Fair website and you can enter entries online with the Delaware State Fair before the June 1, 2018 deadline.

STATE FAIR HELPERS AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The fair is not possible without a cadre of talented 4-Hers and adult volunteers that make it all happen. Consider volunteering to help set-up the building, check-in exhibits, and assist judges. Good help is always needed, especially adult volunteers!  We ask that all helpers be age 8 or older. Check out what we need help with, fill out the 2018 Fair Helpers Form and  Host/Hostess form and return to the Sussex 4-H Office by Friday, June 8!

County Record Books
The 4-H Record Book guidelines and fillable pdf forms for are now available on the State 4-H website.  These guidelines are being implemented statewide.  Please contact the 4-H Office with any questions you have.  Record books are due in AugustPlease contact your club leaders for the specific date they will need your books turned in to sign and review.

Small Engine Workshops
We are pleased to announce Small Engine project workshops.  These will be held at the Environmental Training Center at the Del Tech Georgetown Campus (corner of Vaughn Rd and Howard T. Ennis Rd)

Next meeting date:  Tuesday, June 12 at 7pm

The next practice for Lawn Tractor driving skills practice will be Saturday, June 16 at Ross Mansion in Seaford from 1pm-5pm during the First State Antique Tractor Club Annual Show.

Upcoming training opportunities for volunteers
Below you will see two opportunities that are aimed at training judges to judge 4-H youth entries at the Delaware State Fair.  Even if you are not available to judge the exhibits, you are welcome to come to the training to learn about what is entailed in judging.

Food preservation exhibits are judged at the 4-H building on the state fairgrounds in Harrington on July 17 or 18 (exact date and time to be determined).

Baked goods are judged at the 4-H building on July 19 beginning at 11:30 am. Please let us know ahead of time if you are interested in judging.

  • Food Preservation Training-June 18 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Kent County Extension office in Dover.  Come learn the ins and outs of a good quality home preserved product such as jellies, jams, vegetables, and salsas
  • Baked Goods Training-July 19 at 9am at the 4-H Building at the State Fair. This training will cover the basics of evaluating baked goods in order to judge 4-H youth exhibits.

Large Tractor Driving Training
Scheduled for July 11 at 10:30am at Hoobers in Seaford, DE.

As a reminder, youth who have not competed in this event before or participated in this training before are required to attend this training in order to be able to participate at the Fair.

Those who have attended or participated in past years are welcomed to attend as a refresher.  This information will also be updated on the website.

Summer Meetings
The following meetings will not be held in the summer and resume in August or September.  Watch for updates!
