A sickness. A lost job. An unforeseen circumstance and you could be one of the roughly 8,000 people in Delaware who find themselves homeless. Even though drug addicts are slated to be the largest number of people who are considered displaced, many are former veterans who have not been able to feel at home since coming home. Also, there are more children who are finding themselves among the ranks of homeless. What can be done to help the homeless?
Even the smallest gesture can mean so much to a member of the homeless community. When asked, one thing that the displaced have asked for was a good pair of socks.
Socks?
A good pair of socks can do so much. They can help warm feet on a cold, winter’s night. They can keep a person’s feet dry. Sometimes, socks are used for other purposes, such as gloves on hands to help keep them warm.
With this in mind, Shine a Light 4-H is holding a sock drive for the homeless. We are collecting socks to give to the folks at Code Purple, Sussex County. Code Purple provides a place for homeless to sleep for the night when the temperature drops below 32 degrees. On those nights when Code Purple is in effect, they also provide a nice, warm meal for those who have found themselves displaced.
Can we count on your assistance? We are asking for clean, unused socks. We only ask for socks at this time, but if you would like to place some items that the homeless could use, such as a toothbrush, a comb, deodorant, toothpaste into the pair of socks, that would be appreciated, as well.
We will have a sock collection intake date of Saturday, January 9th, 2016 at the Lighthouse Church, 27225 Kaye Road, Laurel, DE 19956, between 9 am till 12 noon. If your club participates, we will contact Jill Jackson to state how many socks your club donated.
If you would like to help out, please contact the adult leader of Shine a Light 4-H, Rebecca Jones, at 302-628-3414, or 302-258-3550. Thank you in advance for your assistance!
Thank you!
