Club News April 2014

Milford Club – Amanda Kucharzyk, Reporter

The February meeting of the Milford 4-H club was called to order by Jimmy Kucharzyk. Old and new business was discussed. Then, the club created origami daffodil flowers as a craft for Daffodil Days for the American Cancer Society in honor of Mary Argo. This March, the club also participated in a beach grass planting community service event at Delaware Seashore State Park. Over one thousand volunteers participated in this event! This was the 25th year of this event. Club members enjoyed the pleasant weather and the satisfaction of helping the environment. The Milford 4-H club can’t wait for next year’s event.

Lord Baltimore Helping Hands March meeting, was delicious. All members who were taking a Foods Project brought a “Make Your Own” casserole while the rest of the members brought sides and drinks. The casseroles were all very different and the members described what they had used. We also discussed the Favorite Foods Contest. We had 7 members participate, they all received blues and had a great time. Lord Baltimore Helping Hands welcomed two new members, Joelle and Lindsay at our meeting. We ended the meeting with a jewelry making craft.

Clover Knights – Autumn Lenhart, Reporter
Clover Knights 4-H ClubEven though we had a cold and snowy winter the Clover Knights were looking towards spring at our March meeting! Mr. Bo went over all the coming events and handed out the score sheets from the Favorite Foods competition. Then our treasurer Thomas McCabe read the financial report. Finally we heard a report from Ruby Phillips on her horse bowl victory. Congratulations Ruby! Our President, Rebecca Lenhart then proposed that we try to clean up our adopted road. It was decided that we would meet at Mr. Bo’s house on Saturday March 29, 2014 at 2pm to clean the road. Call Mr. Bo if you need directions.

Ms. Noel gave a wonderful and informative presentation about starting a garden. She showed us how to use recyclable like egg shells, toilet paper rolls and cereal boxes to start seeds. We made our own pot from a toilet paper roll and planted a pumpkin seed that, with a lot of love and TLC, will grow into a pumpkin that we can enter into the pumpkin contest in the fall. Ms. Noel had lots of great handouts including some worksheets so we can start out own notebook and keep track of planting and garden expenses. What a great resource for record keeping. We would like to thank the University of Delaware for the potting soil. We look forward to being able to plant our garden in the Master Garden as soon as it warms up.

After we cleaned up all the dirt, Ms. Natalie and Thomas had prepared a gluten free shamrock snack for us that we were able to decorate with icing and sprinkles. Thank you both for a delicious snack.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday April 8, 2014. We will be doing an Easter craft run by our president Rebecca Lenhart and vice president Madison Rice. Think spring and remember it will be here eventually!
