Sunday, November 10th. 4-H Pedal Pushers Bike Club will host a family bike ride on Junction-Breakwater Trail. Meet at the Holland Glade parking lot behind Tanger Outlet’s Seaside. Ride will begin at 1pm. A little about the trail:

This trail follows a section of the former Penn Central railroad between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach for approximately five miles, along an easy contour on a crushed stone surface. The trail is suitable for hikers, bikers, and strollers. It is accessible from the designated trailheads. Trail users will pass through mature hardwood and conifer forests and open fields, and will experience scenic vistas of coastal marshes at the Wolfe Glade and Holland Glade crossings. Interpretive signs provide opportunities to learn about plant and animal life along the trail.

Thursday, December 5th. 4-H Pedal Pushers Bike Club will sponsor an entry into the Georgetown Christmas Parade. The parade begins at 7pm. Contact Mike Love for the lineup location/number and time—likely near Georgetown Elementary School about 5:30pm. We will get together to decorate bikes at the UD REC Annex on Sunday, December 1st from 1pm – 3pm. Helmets are required for all riders.

Saturday, March 1st. 4-H Pedal Pushers Bike Club will host a Bike Tune Up Day.

Tools, minor maintenance materials and help will be available from 10am to 2pm at the UD REC Annex. This is the perfect time to check your tires, adjust your brakes and lube the chain as you prepare for a great bike riding year.

Nature enthusiasts will find abundant warblers, kingfishers, Great Blue Heron and baldcypress trees in their wetland habitats. The trail follows a crushed stone surface and traverses a fresh water wetland over an elevated bridge. This area is popular among birding enthusiasts. The Loblolly Trail allows for a full experience and appreciation of the park.

The bike loop trail links the Park Office, Nature Center, campground, beach bathhouse, outdoor fitness area, observation tower, and the Fort Miles Historic Area. The observation tower is a popular stop along the trail. Climb the circular staircase for a panoramic view of the Cape Region. The Bike Loop provides side trails which connect to the fishing pier and kayak rental, the campground, and an ocean and dune overlook, resting atop a former military bunker. Wednesday, May 14th.  The 4-H Pedal Pushers Bike Club will be participating in the annual Ride of Silence sponsored locally by the Sussex Cyclists Bike Club.

A little about the memorial ride:  Across the nation, more than 600 cyclists are killed on the road every year. A small number compared to the estimated 300,000 premature deaths estimated to result from overweight and obesity-related illnesses. Bicycling is part of the solution to many of our nation’s problems such as obesity, traffic congestion, air pollution and the seemingly unending need to pave over land for parking lots and widen roads. As a silent but active gesture during National Bike Safety Month to memorialize those killed or injured while cycling on the road, Sussex Cyclists will organize its seventh annual Ride of Silence on Wednesday, May 14 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The ride will start behind the Wawa off Dartmouth Road at the entrance to Rolling Meadows on the southbound side of Route One. More information will follow as we get closer to the date.
