And the question was asked, “What is a Demonstration?”
Why thanks for repeating the question!
Demonstrations or Illustrated Talks are the 4-H version of the classic “Show and Tell” presentations. Participation in a county demonstration contest helps 4-H youth gain poise and confidence when talking in front of a group of people. Participants use examples, props, posters, computer presentations and may consult notes when delivering a talk. See the slide show at the end of this post!
Demonstrations may be by an individual or two 4-H’ers may team up for their presentation. Demonstrators learn by researching a category subject and by planning visuals to enhance their talk. Judges consider many factors when evaluating an illustrated talk; presentation of an introduction, body and summary, presenting in a range of 3-15 minutes, appearance, length of talk, visual aids shared with the audience, quality of their posters or slideshows, and source of their research. Participants are prepared to receive random questions from judges or from the audience. Winners of the county contest are eligible to compete at the state level during the Delaware State Fair.
On May 15 & 16, Judges Dan Tabler, Jean Williamson, Cory Whaley and Donna Mowbray heard topics such as how locks and dams (in canals) work, terrariums, safe bull riding, how to add color to your landscape, what’s so wonderful about guitars, hatching chickens, grooming a dog, changing the oil on a go-kart, how easy it is to make fabric flowers and start a small business, leadership in 4-H, blending five fabulous fruits for a cancer- fighting smoothie, making triple sweets from cookies, dough and brownies, and photography,
A Makeup Demonstration Contest was held on Wednesday, May 29, with three additional individual contestants and one team participating. Judges were Barbara Taylor and Michele Walfred. Thanks to Committee Chairs Barbara Taylor and Angel Magee. Photographers: Jackie Arpie, Angel Magee and Michele Walfred, and of course to our judges! Congratulations to our Blue Ribbon winners, who are eligible to compete at the state level in July at the Delaware State Fair.
