I have been interested in how things work my whole life.

I graduated from Delcastle Technical High School in Wilmington, Delaware with an Electronics major. My favorite classes in school were Metal Shop, Wood Shop, and Electrical Shop.

I found automobiles fascinating, so I attended Automotive Training Center in Exton, PA, graduating as an Automotive Machinist. After working as an Automotive Machinist / Engine Rebuilder for several years, I went to college and received a degree in Automotive Technology. I worked as an Automobile Technician and business owner for many years.I started working in a conventional machine shop in the early 90’s.

My previous job was at ATK in Elkton, MD where I machined rocket engine, missile defense, and other aerospace parts to very tight tolerances using manual and CNC machines. I have been fascinated with rockets and space for many years, and it was very interesting to manufacture these parts.

I came to the University of Delaware in 2014 and currently enjoy passing on my knowledge and experience to the next generations.

Ron Cantrell is a Master Machinist, specializing in CAD/CAM and advanced manufacturing techniques. He works closely with upperclassmen students, student groups, and faculty on special projects and senior capstone experiences.

In Ron’s experience, he believes that all good engineers should have a fundamental understanding of machining and design. He is determined to assist each student with machining and its core principles, providing the students with a necessary advantage.

Ron worked many years at the Army Research Laboratory as a CNC machinist building a variety of exciting “things” for them.  Projects such as ballistic armor targets, simulated war heads, armor packages, drones, etc.  Prior to that, Ron spent many years with W.L.Gore in a split role designing and building automation in addition to machining devices and parts for the medical electronics group.

In his new role, here at the University of Delaware, Ron is excited to offer his machining, design and programming knowledge to share with future engineers.
