General Meeting Minutes

First Interest Meeting: May 1, 2013

STEER is a service organization that stands for “Students Teaching Educating Enriching and Reaching”. We reach out to area schools and establishments to teach and tutor students that need help, whether it be on or off campus.

Sam – Vice President
Brittany – Secretary
Matt – Treasurer
Arun – Sergeant at Arms (or conflict mediation)
Mike – Fundraising Officer
Joan – Public Relations Officer
Christine – Social Officer

Part of STEER involves going into off campus schools and tutoring students in need of our help. We have had involved with Carol Phipps, assistant director of clinical studies, to figure out what is needed in order to be able to do this. It has come to our attention that to go into schools, all STEER members will need a criminal background check, which involves fingerprinting. We are trying to do what we can to have the cost of this remain at $30. It could potentially be more (69$) if you care not an education major, but we are looking into it. If, for some reason, you cannot afford this, we may be able to use the fundraising money to help you out.

To be in STEER, there are service hour requirements that must be met. For any executive board members, these hours add up to 12 a semester. For voting membership (the ability to vote on any issues or events in the club) there is a requirement of 6 hours a semester. You are able to get a head start on these hours over the summer, or winter, with 2 hours, but 4 must be done during the semester. Same goes for the executive board, with a total of 8 being done during the semester. Service Hours can now be directly recorded on Student Central!  Click the tab “Service Hours” directly under forms.  As listed, include the name, date, description, and length of service.  Under the description, please additionally include the email contact of the person supervising your service!

We also discussed EELs in the meeting, or Education Enrichment Leaders. (See the EEL page).

If you have any interest in starting an off campus program, please submit the program and contact Andrew ASAP. Forms can be submitted in our new mailbox at Willard Hall room 130.
