Blue Hens bats show up, in victory at UMBC

A four hit performance, including a home run and four RBIs, was the night that freshman Joe Carpenter put together, helping lead the UD baseball team to a 15-6 against UMBC Tuesday night (5/7)

After UMBC plated the first run of the game in the first, Delaware responded greatly scoring multiple runs in each of the next three innings.

During the second, freshman Zach Lesher doubled to eight field driving in two runs to give the Blue Hens the lead. Another run would come to score on a sac fly to give the Hens the 3-1 lead.

After the third, in which Delaware brought across two more runs and UMBC adding another run of their own to make it 5-2, the Hens had an offensive surge in the fourth.

Sophomore Jordan Hutchins had an important hit, clearing the bases with a rope down the left field line driving in three runs. Hutchins would then score later in the inning with junior Vinny Vaccone driving home after reaching on an error.

The Hens pitching was led by starter Tommy Pomatto, who worked three strong innings allowing just two runs on two hits.

Following Pomatto’s exit from the game, the Hens bullpen got off to a shaky start.

UMBC added three 4th inning runs on the bullpen to bring the game into a much closer position. But the Hens offense wouldn’t be silenced as Carpenter, who was a difficult out all night, added his third hit of the night, which scored two runs to make the score 12-5 Blue Hens.

The bullpen then got control of their arms and started to settle in. Junior CJ Schaible worked 3.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. Sophomore Joey Hass then entered and close the door on the game, working two scoreless innings and striking out a pair.

The Hens added three late runs that included Carpenter hitting a late two-run blast of a homerun. UMBC would then string together a late run to make it a 15-6 game, which would end up being the final tally.

The Hens just have a pair of CAA series left. A matchup with Hostra is up next, as they face off for a three game set at Bob Hannah stadium.
