A hard-fought, 10-6 victory over visiting Binghamton on Saturday (3/9), extended the UD mens lacrosse team’s best start in a decade to six wins against one loss.
“We learned a lot about ourselves to this point in the season and we hope to build on this success as we look ahead to a tough four-game road stretch that leads into conference play.” Blue Hens head coach Ben Deluca, said.
Senior Captain Joe Eisele led the Blue Hens with a team-high 4 goals, junior Charlie Kitchen, who leads the Hens in goals on the season, added another 2 goals as well as an assist.
Griffin Konen and T.J. Tiernan each had 2 goals to lead Binghamton offensively, who have lost each of their first four games.
The defense and goal-keeping of the Blue Hens also played a key factor in the game, with Junior goalkeeper Matt Deluca stopping 13 out of 19 shots he faced, and tallying his 400th career save, which puts him at 10th all-time in UD mens lacrosse history.
“We played within our game plan and it started with the close defense and the connection with the rope unit.” senior midfielder Alex Brunner said.
The Blue Hens held close leads of 5-3 after the first quarter and 7-4 at halftime. In the third, Binghamton pulled within 1 goal making it 7-6, but the Hens then scored 3 unanswered goals and held the Bearcats scoreless the remainder of the contest, to secure the 10-6 victory.
Off to its best start since 2006, the Blue Hens now travel for a 4 straight road games, with their next game against Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, March 16th.
