FUNCTIONAL EXTERNAL MEMORY AID TOOL (FEMAT)
The FEMAT is a performance-based measure of applied cognitive abilities and attempted compensation. The FEMAT takes approximately 15-minutes to administer and is comprised of 11-items that simulates everyday living tasks (e.g., remembering details of a birthday invitation). A unique element of the FEMAT is that patients are encouraged to use external memory aids (e.g., a calendar or pill organizer) to complete the tasks during the 11-items. Thus, scoring is based on both task accuracy and external memory aid use. We have conducted research providing evidence for the initial validity and reliability of the FEMAT. The FEMAT is not a norm-referenced test because it is designed to complement traditional cognitive test data by showing the clinician where the breakdown occurs in real-world task performance and to help clinicians design person-centered compensatory treatments. We have made the FEMAT freely accessible to providers and can be downloaded using the request form below.
