DESCRIPTION

This course provides hands-on instruction to prepare student researchers to design and perform experiments involving rodent handling and rodent surgery. Key topics include animal protocol design and execution, ethics, regulatory considerations, and drug/medical device approval.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an introduction to Bio methodology. This course is general in nature. Students will be given the opportunity for many hands-on techniques as related to animal handling, injections, and surgical techniques. There will be guest lecturers on subjects relevant to protocol writing and grant applications, statistics, ethics and regulations, and Drug/Medical device approval process.

The student will benefit from this course in that he or she will be more familiar with the process required in an animal research program and be skilled in common techniques used.

Instructor permission only.

This is a face to face course in which attendance will affect your final grade.

  • Understand the ethics of Animal Research
  • Understand and apply common medical and surgical techniques used in Animal Research
  • Gain familiarity with the process of having an animal research protocol approved
  • Gain familiarity with the Drug/Medical device approval process
  • Construct a case study / write a protocol

Technology

No special technology is needed for this class. This is a face to face class with hands on learning.

LEARNING ASSESSMENT

  • Students will be expected to handle live animals and surgical instrumentation with care
  • Evaluation will be based on basic proficiency of the required techniques taught in his course

The final course grade will be calculated using the following components:

Attendance

Attendance will be taken for each session. Failure to attend will reflect negatively on your grade. Please inform the instructor if you cannot attend a class prior to the day of class. Since this is a hands-on lab-based class, there will not be opportunities to make them up. If you expect to miss class, please advise the instructor via email (cms@udel.edu) as soon as you know. Students are responsible for collecting any course material / handouts in a timely manner from said missed class.

Absences on religious holidays listed in university calendars are recognized as an excused absence. Nevertheless, students are urged to remind the instructor of their intention to be absent on a particular upcoming holiday. Absences on religious holidays not listed in university calendars, as well as absences due to athletic participation or other extracurricular activities in which students are official representatives of the university, shall be recognized as excused absences when the student informs the instructor in writing during the first two weeks of the semester of these planned absences for the semester.

Application of Techniques

This course will require you to handle live mice and rats. You will be taught how to do so correctly and safely. You will also be taught how to do injections, and some minor surgical techniques. You will be taught how to use surgical and anesthesia equipment. You will be expected to do these things with proficiency, safely and in a timely manner.

Faculty Statement on Disclosures of Instances of Sexual Misconduct

If, at any time during this course, I happen to be made aware that a student may have been the victim of sexual misconduct (including sexual harassment, sexual violence, domestic/dating violence, or stalking), I am obligated to inform the university’s Title IX Coordinator.
