"Mockumenting the End"

In this project, students work in groups of 5 to plan, produce, and present a 5-minute mockumentary film on an topic of their choice that’s related to the course’s themes (technology and justice). The mockumentary should imagine a world in which a specific technology has “ended” one subject as we know it, exploring what our world would look like with that element changed. The speculative future students explore should be based off or responding to real-world reactions to developing technology.

Create Your Own Superhero

For this project, students create their own original superhero the represents a group, identity, or cause that the student believe needs one. The hero can be serious or earnest, funny, ridiculous, parodic, etc. This project has three components: 1) a biography of the hero, 2) a visual representation of the hero, and 3) a news story about one of the hero’s recent exploits.

Video Public Service Announcement

For this project, students use their Argumentative Research Paper to remediate the traditional academic essay and argument into the format of a public genre: a video public service announcement. The goal of this project is for students to re-present their position to a public audience of their choice with the goal of creating change around their topic. Students also submit a 1-2 page single-spaced reflective memo reflecting on their remediation process.

Digital Storytelling

For this project, students combine intellectual thought with personal reflection and library-based research to compose a digital story in which they share a topic of personal interest from their perspective, weaving their own experiences with and impressions of the topic with the results of library-based research. The story should make use of a simple tool, such as iMovie or Wondershare Filmora, to combine images and, in some cases, videos with a carefully scripted and rehearsed voiceover.

Research Presentation

For this project, students present the background research they have done for their upcoming research paper and explain what they think the final research paper will do. Students will organize their  thoughts and prioritize information in a way that supports their not-fully-formed thesis about their research.

Lightning Talk

For this project, students transform their research paper into a public facing Lightning Talk presentation. The goal of a Lightning Talk is to give a quick and cohesive overview of a topic, problem, solution, or idea. As the name implies, they are fast and short – usually no more than five minutes. This project will challenges students to condense their arguments into its most essential points and convey them in a creative and engaging way.

Age Studies

This assignment asks students to create a website, graphic design project, podcast, or video that selects a topic related to older adulthood that they experience to be underrepresented in public discourse about aging. Students focus specifically on aging and older adulthood and the systems that support the lives of older adults.

Multimodal Remix

This assignment gives students the opportunity to experiment with sharing their research in a concise and creative way. Students create an audio or video recording (5 minutes maximum) that explains an element of their research (from their research paper). The goal is to explore how multimedia tools can help students communicate their ideas effectively. The focus is on learning, experimenting, and finishing—embracing imperfections as part of the process.

Parodic Propoganda Campaign

For this assignment, students create either a piece of written propoganda or visual propaganda. The propaganda campaign must be for a fictional cause or organization and should relate to real world social conditions and events. The campaign materials can express a message that students agree with, are critical of, or are neutral about but find interesting or funny, but must express a specific message.
