Using Sources

Source Evaluation

Positionality Statements

This lesson plan introduces the concept of positionality statements to help students understand that scholars
do not leave their identities and life experiences behind when they conduct research. Students practice a new
way to evaluate and understand the perspective–and limitations–that scholars bring to their research.

Peer-Reviewed, Scholarly Sources

Reading Strategies for Peer-Reviewed Articles

This lesson plan introduces the genre of the scholarly journal article, prompting students to identify and analyze common features of these complex texts in order to read them strategically and increase comprehension. Students develop a basic understanding of a chosen article on their research topic as they locate bibliographic information, summarize the argument, and locate sections and important terminology.

Rhetorical Analysis

Media Analysis

The idea behind this lesson plan is to get students to think about what goes into creating media for marketing, advertisement, information, entertainment etc., and the explicit and implicit lessons these pieces of media are communicating. Students watch a series of TikToks, considering the rhetorical situation of each one.

Syllabus Day

Growth Mindset

This lesson plan should occur on the first day of class. It introduces students to the term “growth mindset,” meaning that writing is not one “skill,” but a series of skills that are learnable rather than solely instinctual. Through this mindset, students are reminded that even natural talent needs to be grown and engaged, and that writing might be challenging but approaching it with positivity and willingness to learn is key to success.
