Difficulties with the Research Process…

I started off my research for Seasonal Affective Disorder when I wrote my first blog. It start off very easy and interesting, mainly because I was purely looking at the surface of this issue. After I decided to continue research on SAD for my final paper, I ran into some trouble. It started the day we had class at the library and I wanted to check out some books after class. After I found books off the library website, I realized the majority of these books were before 2000, which drew a bit of concern for me. As I started to analyze the book sources, as well as some online web articles, my problems started to arise because of the overwhelming amount of information.

One of the major things that was tripping me up for the research essay was the problem/solution guidelines. I did not know much about SAD in a biological perspective, so the majority of my “solutions” were actually invalid as I completed further research. This was a difficult point during my research process because I could not find a true solution, since there is not a major problem to fix, so I started to freak out.

Some minor problems that I ran into is that the majority of my sources are books that are extremely long. At first it was a little overwhelming having over 5 books in my hands, because I did not know where to start. After sitting down and looking at the Contents of the beginning of each book, I started to narrow down what I thought were good chapters to analyze, rather than reading the entire book. This guided my research in the right direction and stimulated more ideas for my thesis.

After explaining to Christina my problem, she suggested I take a different route and turn this paper into a Research argument, which flows along better with the information I found for SAD. After I met with Christina, my problems were  resolved and she made me feel a lot better about my topic, her advice was simple…

 

Overall, I learned that it is important not to get discouraged while you are researching, and more importantly, do not be fearful that your topic is going to change. One of my issues was that I became attached to my original idea and did not have an open mind. After I realized it was not working in my favor, I worked through my frustration and continued researching which led me to find the ideas and information I am now using in my research paper! It may be a bit overwhelming, but always look for more books and web articles that will further your research and lead you to formulate new ideas!

I completely feel your pain when it came to the overwhelming amount of information! My topic also had a ton of information that I just was not sure what to do with. We both also had to discuss with our teacher on the direction we should go in. I feel like that was a great decision because after that I felt better about my topic and what I needed to do.
