Correlation Between Weather and Mood

The reason why I am interested in the topic of the correlation between weather and mood is because it seems to be a prevalent component of my lifestyle and the people around me. The background information I have on this topic is from experiences in my own life. Everyone is always anticipating summer because of the amazing weather. But why is this weather desired so much?  Most people want the season of summer because when its beautiful outside with the sun shining, you can’t help but be happy. When its a rainy day, everyone wants to lay in bed and watch movies and their emotions change along with the weather. So does this correlation actually exist or is it just a coincidence? Are these major assumptions I have made, or does it have some truth?

One of the questions that was asked in my blog topic proposal was how summer affects your mood. I found an article online that had statistics from a study by two researchers, Howard and Hoffman in 1984. In this study they found a significant correlation between weather and mood, especially in regards to humidity. These two researchers found that as the hours of sunshine increase, so does their optimism. Three factors that all had the most significant effect on mood were temperature, humidity and hours of sunshine. Another study by Sanders and Brizzolara in 1982 found similar statistics in that “humidity was a predictor for lack of vigor, elation and affection”.

Another question that was addressed in my blog is about the assumptions I made about how people would rather lay by the pool in the summer than sled in the winter. This statement is obviously bias and is not necessarily valid. But, from the research I found in the article, weather does affect your mood, but not specially your preference in activity. Therefore, that is something I am going to stray away from. Instead, I am going to solely focus on how the change in weather patterns can affect a person’s attitude from that day. I was pleased to find that many studies have researched this correlation and found similar findings.

  1. Dear Nina,
I completly agree with you, i feel like our mood definitly changes according to the weather. i like how you put it, and the research you did. I was personally interested in this topic some time ago as well and i ended up doing some research which gave me the chemical basis of why our body releases “happy” endorphins while the sun is out. if you were interested in the scientific explanantion i would look into that. i generally think this is a very good topic, and i feel like you could really expand in it. i like the research you did so far, i dint know that humidity played an important roll as well.

  2. Hey Nina! This is a really creative idea and I like it a lot because like most people I would imagine it’s easy to relate to because we have all shared these feelings.

I thought your picture choice was really effective because it peaked my interest when I first clicked on your page and made the page more appealing/interesting in general. It also worked well the way you wrote as if you were talking through your ideas with a friend; it made the post easy to read and more fun.

Something to think about for next time would be being more specific with the research you found and also providing a link to the research. Otherwise, awesome job keep it up!

  3. Yo nina, this idea is one that I’ve thought about. As morgan said, I feel like everyone can relate to this. One complaint- perhaps next time you could include a link or two to your theories! You stated that you found an article– I would have loved to see it. Besides that I have no complaints. I think this is a great idea and will work great! Keep doing ya thang.

  4. Hey Nina! I think this is an awesome idea to write about because it’s not something people normally think about. I really like your paragraph about the two researchers finding a correlation between the hours of sunshine and happiness. It reminded me of SAD, seasonal affective disorder, something I’ve seen on TV before. Not sure if you’ve heard of it but people with this disorder get depressed during the winter and aren’t depressed during the summer. Something to think about next time would be to maybe say which part of the article your research is from. It’s a small thing, but it might help the readers a bit. Keep of the great work!

  5. Nina,
I really like your topic because its something that I’ve found myself thinking about recently too. I’ve noticed that lately on warm, sunny days things could go terribly wrong for me but I would still be in a great mood just because of the weather! I think the research that you have done is very thorough and interesting, but for your future blog posts I think you you should take the research into your own hands and study the recently fluctuating weather’s effects on the students here at UD. I think you could do a little “experiment” and create a series of basic questions to ask students both on beautiful days and crummy days. Then you could compare the answers and demeanor of the students to further prove your point.
    Hope I could help!

  6. Hey Nina! The argument you are introducing is very appealing to me, mainly because I have always associated my mood with the weather. When it is rainy and gloomy I usually feel very sluggish and lazy. I think it is very effective if you expand on the studies you have found for a future research paper. The studies you have found are interesting because it is not common for people to associate humidity with a mood, it is more common to assume sunshine and rain. To introduce humidity creates more of an interesting argument.

I also like how you added an image because it drew me in to looking at the different moods I, myself, would associate with.

In addition, I think when you mentioned to stay away from bias opinions and focus more on the facts, statistics, and research will create a stronger argument.

What I am thinking, in countries/states where the weather is pretty constant is there a correlation with constant mood rather than places like here where the weather changes often so our mood tends to fluctuate?

  7. Hey Nina!
I enjoyed reading your blog post! Your topic is so different and unique, that it makes your blog stand out from the other blogs.
I’ve always believed that weather affected your mood, so I appreciated the research you provided because it backed up not only my claim that weather affects your mood, but also your belief.
I really like your format of your blog because you provided enough information without having so much text, which could be overwhelming.
An idea for your next blog is to look at places in the world, like Seattle, and see how weather affects the people that live there.
    Can’t wait to read more!

Great work engaging with critical, scholarly texts! They add a real sense of authority to your blog post. Also, I think the tone you’re using strikes a good balance between casual and informative.

We talked a little bit yesterday (Wednesday) about seasonal affective disorder and how t might be an interesting route to explore on this blog, so here are the links to a few recent articles about S.A.D.:
