What’s Happening in the Vegetable Teaching Garden, Week of 6/24/2024
Considering how hot things have been, this was actually a rather comfortable gardening day.  Still, we tended to the ever-important watering task, as not enough rain came yesterday evening. We harvested Carrots (Touchon) from the Gardener's Supply Raised Bed, a couple of early yellow Summer Squashes (49er Hybrid), and some Blueberries and Black Raspberries. We fertilized the tomatoes. Welcome to the garden. Today everything in the garden was watered thoroughly. With the dry weather and heat, master gardeners will thoroughly water the garden Thursday morning as well. Harvesting this week: We have now harvested all our Brassicas-  Broccoli, Kale, Collards, and Cauliflower – just in time, as the cabbage worms are beginning to make inroads. Welcome to the Garden.  Today, we maintained the garden by watering, weeding, and trimming. We turned compost and distributed it at the lower (south) end of the Long Bed prior to planting the Swiss Chard (Bright Lights). We harvested Carrots (Rainbow Mix and Touchon), Turnips (Purple Top White Globe), Kale (Lacinato type Black Magic), Collards (Flash), and Lettuce (Black Seeded Simpson). Welcome to the Garden. We had a sunny day in the garden with temperatures approaching 80 degrees by the time we finished up. Very importantly, we watered today.  The rain gauge indicated only ¼ inch of rain since the last watering of the garden.  Compost was turned and finished compost applied to Sections 1 & 2 of the Long Bed in preparation for planting Swiss Chard there next week. Welcome to the Garden! The teaching garden blog has a special Tuesday edition due to the Memorial Day holiday. Everything in the garden seems to be growing full tilt. Beans are rocketing up, turnip plants are huge, and everything is looking fantastic.
