My Dream Career

feature-obgynMy dream job is to be a Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OB/GYN). For the longest time,I have dreamed of becoming a doctor. An OB/GYN is a doctor who provides medical and surgical help to women. In addition, they provide care related to pregnancy and the reproductive system of women. OB/GYNs also specialize in childbirth, treating and counseling women throughout their pregnancy, from giving prenatal diagnoses to delivery and postpartum care. They track and treat the health of bothmother and fetus as the pregnancy progresses. The medicine annual pay of an OB/GYN is $212,000. According to Medscape.com, “about 25% of ob/gyns earn $300,000 or more; about 10% earn $100,000 or less.” Overall, this is definitely a great income for any household in 2014. Because I haven’t decided what medical schools I am interested in attending, I am not sure where I will end up being in the future. However, it is great knowing that OB/GYNs are in demand everywhere you go. There are women all across the U.S. and all around the world who are pregnant or may have reproductive system issues; since there is always a demand for healthcare workers, I am pretty much guaranteed to have a job. The working conditions for this type of doctor is pretty comfortable. For the most part, OB/GYNs work in hospitals, clinics, consulting rooms and operating theaters. A lot of the times, these doctors will work independently with minimum supervision; however, there are times when teamwork will be necessary for problem-solving. Depending on the position, OB/GYNs work  80 duty hours per week and have at least one continuous 24-hour period off duty each week. Although a lot of perseverance and commitment is required to get through all of the years for schooling, I believe that if I set my mind to it, I can definitely accomplish my dream. I am excited to see what the future holds and to strive to do my best in order to reach my goals.

“Is it better to study what you love or what you think will get you a job?”

In today’s society, one of the main issues that people deal with is their careers and/or jobs. While growing up, every child has a dream, whether it is to become a doctor, an astronaut, or maybe even a professional athlete. Those “dreams” are engraved into our minds, and society makes us believe that we can peruse any dream and you can become anything you want to become [as long as you put your mind to it]. However, as we begin to age, our minds begin to shift focus. Is it really possible for me to become whatever I want in life? Will I be able to provide for myself and my future family if I really do what I want career wise? Unfortunately, the answer in most cases is no.

In the video “What If Money Was No Object?,”    one point that was made was “it is better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life that is spent in a miserable way.” I completely agree with this statement 100%, but is it really possible to do this? In my opinion, when determining what to do with your future, it is important to find a balance between doing what you love and actually being able to make a reasonable amount of money while doing it. As we mature, it is important to accept the fact that we will have responsibilities to take care of; in most cases, caring for these responsibilities requires money. It would be very unreasonable to choose a job where you do what you love on a daily basis, but at the end of the week doesn’t leave you with enough cash to care for yourself [and/or possible family]. In this case, the best route to take is to choose a job that you enjoy enough, while making a sufficient amount of cash. Doing what you may not necessarily like doing.. just to make an income is a sad reality in our society. Agree with me or not, but money is important.

Although it may not be possible to pursue your favorite hobbies as a career, there is always the opportunity to participate in your favorite activities during your spare time throughout the week. We may not always have our way in society, however, there is always an alternative way to enjoy doing the things you love most.
