MAPS LAB

at the University of Delaware

Core Values

(last updated April 30, 2025)

We value a space in which all members of our lab, as well as members of our community (including our research participants!) feel open and free to communicate – whether it’s in asking questions or contributing their opinions – without fear of judgment.

We are motivated by a strong collaborative environment, in which its members strive to be active listeners so that everyone’s input is valued and heard.

We value and welcome a wide range of perspectives, as we feel that it enriches our science, as well as our professional and personal experiences. These perspectives include, but is not limited to, differences in age, gender, sex, socio-economic background, education, race, ethnicity, discipline, and political affiliation.

As a group, we value kindness and mutual respect.

Our Pledge

As a research group, we pledge to remain open to continuing growth.

We pledge to promote a culture that stands up for others, and for ourselves. We acknowledge that we may not always know exactly the right thing to say or do as a situation is unfolding in real time. In those instances, we intend to continue the discussion after the situation has passed, so that we may learn and grow from that experience and acquire the skills necessary to handle similar situations better in the future.

To that end, we consider the work towards extending research and educational experiences as an ongoing conversation, and we intend to devote at least one lab meeting per semester to hold these conversations.
