Thesis Topic: Green Synthesis of 4,4’-dimethylbiphenyl
Research Description: Biphenyl-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid (BDA) has been identified as a precursor to engineering plastics. This project aims to prepare selectively the BDA precursor 4,4’-dimethylbiphenyl (DMB) using biomass-derived molecular precursors such as 2-methylfuran and ethylene (from bioethanol). The first step consists of the oxidative coupling of 2-methylfuran to form 5,5’-dimethyl-bifuran (DMBF) through Pd(II)-based homogeneous catalysis, and the second step consists of the addition of ethylene to this precursor via a tandem Diels-Alder cycloaddition-dehydration reaction (using heterogeneous acid catalysts).
