Turkey Hunter Safety Course Registration

Delaware 4-H Shooting Sports Hunter Education Instructors Patty and Gary Utley will host a Delaware Hunter Education — Mandatory Turkey Hunter Safety Course for our 4-H youth and their immediate family members.

The course will be held in the New Castle building at the Delaware State Fair on March 16th from 8:30 AM to approximately 2:00 PM. (Lunch will NOT be provided. Feel free to bring snacks if needed.) 4-H youth and immediate family members wishing to sign up for the class can contact Caroline Del Vecchio at (302) 730-4000. An accurate headcount is needed, and advanced sign-up is required for all youth and their immediate family members who wish to attend the class. The last day for sign-up is March 8th.

4-H youth 10 and older are invited to attend the class. (Youth must be 10 as of March 16th, 2024) Youths 12 and younger will need a parent or guardian present during the class. (Parents are reminded that younger students require the maturity and vocabulary sufficient to understand the subject matter and complete assignments.)

Youth Turkey Hunting Day is April 6th, 2024. This season is open to any youth 10 to 15 years of age. Youth hunters must hunt under the direct supervision of an adult, 21 years or older. Adult companions must be licensed to hunt in Delaware (or be license exempt) and must have taken and successfully passed a Delaware-approved Turkey Hunter Safety Course. Hunters 13-15 years old must have a valid Delaware Junior Hunting License and must have passed a Delaware-approved Basic Hunter Safety course and a Delaware-approved Turkey Hunter Safety Course.

Youth 12 and under are not required to complete the Mandatory Turkey Hunter Safety Course but must have or obtain a License Exempt Number (LEN) and hunt under the direct supervision of an adult 21 years of age or older who is the lawful holder of a Delaware hunting license or is the license exempt for hunting in Delaware. While turkey hunting, the accompanying adult must have taken and successfully passed a Delaware-approved Turkey Hunter Safety Course.

All hunters 13 and older must complete a mandatory Turkey Hunter Safety Course. Upon completion of this course, hunters will need to reprint their hunting license (if they already have one), as completion of the course will be indicated on the new license. Hunters who have completed the course will no longer need to carry a Hunter Education card as proof of completion as long as their hunting license indicates they have completed the course. (Please allow a week for your information to be entered into the Hunter Education system before attempting to print a replacement hunting license.)
Normal bag limits and regulations apply, and all turkeys taken must be registered. (Reference the Delaware Hunter Trapper Guide.)

All state wildlife areas and State Forests open for turkey hunting will be opened for the Youth Turkey Hunt Day.
