Dear 4-H’ers, Parents, and Leaders:

Summer is fast approaching and over the last month or so, 4-H has been in high gear with all the many different 4-H events and activities taking place in Kent County and 4-H statewide. Congratulations to all 4-Hers who participated in the many judging contests, horse bowl, demonstrations and the archery contest.  Great job to all the clubs that participated in the Litter Barrel contest, there were some very creative entries! Our last Junior Council meeting of the year is this Thursday, May 27 at 7pm.  Junior council members should have received an email with meeting details.  The next Links meeting is also scheduled for this Thursday, May 27 at 7pm.

A new date has been set for the Kent County 4-H Fundraiser, Basket Auction, at the Delaware State Fairgrounds on August 29, in the afternoon.  Please mark your calendars now, and watch for more information to come soon.  We are looking for item donations for the live or silent auction.  All clubs are encouraged to donate a basket and if an individual or business is interested in donating please contact the Kent County 4-H Office.  We use the funds raised during this event to help support the 4-H programming that takes place during the year, family events, leadership opportunities, 4-H overnight camps, day camps, etc.

Summer 4-H Day Camp is being planned for July 5-9, so be sure to register and invite your friends to join us, deadline to register is June 18.

Just approved for in-person, Delaware 4-H State Camp will be taking place in June, during the traditional weeks.  There is a waiting list, so if you are unable to attend or If you received a scholarship and do not plan on attending, please notify the 4-H office so someone else can participate.  Delaware 4-H Environmental Camp is June 11-13, back at Camp Barnes, after a few years away.  The camp counselors are looking forward to attending and leading the younger campers through this exciting camp. I personally will be attending Environmental Camp, so please let me know if you have any questions.

Our Kent County Sponsored Horse Show, as part of the Eastern Shore Western Horse Association, will be held at the Delaware State Fairgrounds on Sunday, June 27th. We are looking for a few 4-H members to help at the ribbon table for the horse show.

The Delaware State Fair is right around the corner and we know all of you are beginning your preparations for this big event. 4-H members definitely shine this week as they exhibit project work, participate in judging contests and make various presentations with public speaking, talent show, consumer bowl, avian bowl, and demonstrations throughout the fair week. Remember, all entries for the State Fair
must be entered online by June 1st. Please note: fair tags will not be mailed to your house; they will be picked up from the 4-H Office by your leader. Your leader will share information on how and when to pick them up.  The 4-H Delaware State Fair newsletter will be shared soon.  There are many opportunities to help with fair setup, entry processing, during the fair or with fair cleanup.  Please consider helping with the building set up on June 30th, or serve as a Host of the 4-H Building during the fair.  We really count on 4-H member and 4-H family help.

Wanted: Kent County 4-H is looking for a volunteer to participate in the Pig Kissin’ Contest, to raise funds for the Harrington Business Association Scholarship Fund.
Please let me know if you are willing to do this!

Finally, thank you to all who supported the Paper Clover Promotion at Tractor Supply, by purchasing a paper clover.  The Kent County 4-H program does receive a large portion of the proceeds collected; these funds help fund leadership and camp opportunities.

We look forward to seeing you in-person, at an upcoming 4-H event.

Your friend in 4-H,

Kristin Cook, Extension Educator, 4-H & Youth
