Dear Kent County 4-H Families and Friends,

There are many great 4-H events and activities currently in the planning stages and I hope that you consider participating in some of these!  I have included some important reminders and announcements in the paragraph below, however, be sure to scroll down to the blue links listed on the second half of this post, to see all the important newsletter items for May.

All Tractor Supply Stores have started the 4-H Paper Clover Campaign for spring 2021.  We are asking for your support by purchasing a 4-H clover; we do receive funds from this campaign in our local county programs and it makes a difference!

Congratulations to all the 4-H seniors out there… we wish you the best as your current chapter starts to close, and as you look ahead to new and exciting things.

I can tell you that the 4-H staff is looking forward to the many highlights of a typical 4-H summer!  Although we do not know all the details of how the summer events will look, we hope that 4-H will be able to hold our summer traditions in a way that keeps everyone safe, while still participating in important character building, life skill enhancing experiences that 4-H is known for.

A special Thank You! to all the club organizational leaders and supporting project leaders for all that you do.  4-H relies on your commitment to our future generations to deliver the programs~ If anyone has an interest, passion or talent that they would like to share with 4-H youth, please contact Kristin at kristin@udel.edu.  We have opportunities for adults to volunteer, whether that is a short-term project group or an on-going basis.  If anyone is employed by a company that encourages community service, we would love to talk to you about how you can be part of the 4-H volunteer program.

As always, if you have any ideas, questions or feedback, we are always happy to hear or listen.  Please feel free to contact me at kristin@udel.edu or on my cell phone at (302) 242-8895.

Here are a few important updates:

  • Archery contest will now have a “novice” category for any 4-Her who is in their first or second year of participating in archery.  This group will have extra instructors available to assist 4-Hers.
  • Demonstration contest registration deadline has now passed.  All registrants should be receiving their reporting time over the next day or two.  Please contact the office if you have any conflicts.
  • Make-Up demonstrations: If a 4-Her is interested in still doing a make up demonstration, please contact the 4-H office to schedule a time.  cadv@udel.edu
  • Day Camp, although not yet approved by the University, will hopefully be held as it is traditionally.  We hope to share good news soon!  Teens: watch for counselor sign-up information!
  • Favorite Foods contest will not be rescheduled for 2021, see you in March 2022!
  • 4-H Foundation Scholarships for College are due May 1st
  • Horticulture, Clothing and Wildlife Judging Contests will be held May 12.  Participants must register!
  • Delaware State Fair 4-H Entries must be entered by June 1.  The fair is recommending that everyone download and use the ShoWorks Passport App to submit entries.
  • Delaware 4-H State Teen Council is planning a virtual Legislative Day Series… watch for more information coming soon!
  • There will be no Junior Council meeting on 5/25. The group will be sending a doodle poll to members to help with organizing a final event for the year.
  • The Kent County 4-H Livestock Show information is now available, entry deadline is 5/2
  • Delaware Dairy Lease Deadline had been extended to May 17.  This will be a firm deadline, please have completed leases submitted by this date.

Also, is it too early to talk about Record Books?!?!  We encourage all 4-Hers to complete record books~ and there is a newly updated fillable form available.  Its never to early to start working on your record book, and the templates will be uploaded soon on our website.  Check back on this letter and we will add the link for easier navigating!

Your friend in 4-H,

Kristin
