Volunteer Opportunity:  Christiana Care is piloting a new Walking Buddy program that will be a great opportunity for students interested in potentially pursuing PT as a profession or even those already in the DPT program. We are recruiting a minimum of  10 students for the pilot scheduled to begin in the fall. Attached is the draft of an assignment description. Please see the Roles and Responsibilities section on page 2 for the tasks associated with this assignment.   This is a program that will utilize the students to work closely with rehab and nursing to help mobilize patients in the acute care setting.  They will gain valuable experience and extensive training in communicating with patients as well as safely helping them mobilize.  These will be patients that will be first screened for appropriateness by nursing and/ or therapy to assure they are safe to walk with volunteers.  Programs like this have been proven to be highly successful in combating the negative effects of immobility in acute care settings, facilitating discharge, and driving up patient satisfaction with their overall experience.  I am hoping that you can share this great opportunity with your DPT students as well as your undergrad students who might be interested in exploring PT as a profession.  Students will be assigned a 3-4 hour afternoon or evening shift that should make it manageable to work around busy college student schedules.

If interested, please contact Rose Wessells, Manager, Volunteer Services directly via email at
