Blog Post #3

This author discusses the way that large numbers of ants tend to come together into groups in order to move large objects. This process is called cooperative transport and is used by almost every species of ants on the planet. The authors of this journal argue that we can learn a lot from the efficiency of this collaboration and that ants are an underutilized resource when figuring out new and more efficient ways to conduct the four phases of cooperative transport which are decision, recruitment, organization, and transport. This author uses many sources in order to elaborate on the four stages of cooperative transport and support his argument regarding further research into how ants work as a group to complete larger tasks.

This article provides new insight regarding the way that the ant community comes together and works as a unit in order to accomplish larger tasks and raised the question of what else this allows them to do and how can some colonies or species be more efficient than others. I found this works cited page to be very useful and lead to many more relevant and helpful sources. This could come in handy while typing up my actual essay. This research could be useful in making my own points when talking about how ants can be useful by effecting more than just the environment by being an aid to science while studying group movements and cooperative transport.

    Jake,

I really enjoyed reading this addition to your blog. I learned a lot of very interesting things about the habits and daily activities of ants. I didn’t know that they were so alike all over the world. Just like people they can all find the best way to do something. I also found your idea to check the authors work sited list very helpful. I will have to remember that as I go on researching my own topic. Any way great job on this post and i can’t wait for the next one.

    Hey Jake,

I think your topic is very interesting, so it is nice reading a blog in which I can learn so many new things. Since ants are so little they obviously can’t be too efficient in doing things, such as moving, on their own. It is impressive that such little creatures that seem so useless are actually capable of coming together to accomplish a common goal, such as moving larger objects than they are capable to on their own. I agree with your point that we can learn a lot about efficiency and cooperation from looking at that of ants. If they can be so efficient, than you would think almost anything or anyone can. I like the direction you are going with ants being useful to not only the environment but also to science and research. Great job and I am really looking forward to reading your next post!

    hey Jake,
cool article, its crazy to see how effectively ants can communicate with each other to accomplish tough tasks. i guess in some way their more evolved then us. i remember reading somewhere there ants were pound for pound one of the strongest organisms, and that a single ant in some species could lift an entire leaf by itself. on the note of communal effort, have you ever watched a colony of ants migrate to a new home? they move as a large cluster, foraging along the way, at create a living wall over the queen while they move. it was a really cool video to watch and discuss in an article like this.

    Hi Jake,

Overall, I thought you had a great blog post. I found it very interesting how you talked about ants and the way they work together. I never knew that about them before and also never realized that ants are the same across the globe. Your blog post as opened me up to a new way of thinking about these small but impressive creatures. Up until now, I never really though much about Ants, but now I have a new perspective. My only recommendation would be to talk more about your source, such as the title and author. Otherwise, good job and I’m looking forward to seeing what you write about next!

    Good luck,
