IT-RCI Workshop Series April 1-22

UDIT Research CyberInfrastructure (IT-RCI) group will be offering the following more advanced workshops in April. Please make sure you register for all workshops as soon as possible. Although we offer all of our workshops free of charge, there is a cost to us for staff time, so please be respectful and attend if you register.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All registrations will close by noon the day before the workshop’s scheduled date or earlier if capacity of room is reached and there is no remote option available. Please pay attention to workshops noted as hands-on which means you need to attend in-person and there is no remote option. Also please read all prerequisites for each workshop before registering. If you have any questions about any workshop or concerns about meeting the prerequisites, please email it-rci-info@udel.edu for help.

Getting Started with DARWIN

This hands-on workshop is an introduction to using DARWIN covering the basics of dos and don’ts, connecting, workgroup, startup files, storage options, VALET, allocations, and running jobs presented by the UD IT-RCI group in-person . No remote option.

Prerequisites: An active DARWIN account, attendance of Introduction to HPC and Introduction to Linux/Unix Hands-on Workshop (Part 1 and 2) or have equivalent knowledge and skills.

Date: Tuesday, April 1, 2025
Time: 10:00AM – 11:30AM EST
Location: Studio B (305 Pearson Hall)

Registrationis required and will be closed when the number of registrants reaches the limit of 48 for each date.

Jupyter Notebooks on UD HPC clusters

This hands-on workshop will guide you through utilizing Jupyter Notebooks on the UD HPC clusters (DARWIN or Caviness). It will cover setting up a Jupyter notebook on the cluster via Slurm, creating Python virtual environments, and demonstrate basic Machine Learning examples leveraging GPU acceleration presented by the UD IT-RCI group in-person. No remote option.

Prerequisites: An active DARWIN or Caviness account, basic Linux/Unix skills or attended Introduction to Linux/Unix Hands-on Workshop (Part 1 and 2).

Date: Thursday, April 10, 2025
Time: 9:30AM – 11:00AM EST
Location: Studio B (305 Pearson Hall)

Registrationis required and will be closed when the number of registrants reaches the limit of 48 for each date.

HPC Modular Environment Management with VALET

Managing environment variables in Unix-like operating systems can be a daunting task for users. Software documentation often indicates the user should alter his or her login files to enable functionality. These directions may work, but they are changes made to the user’s account across the entire computing system. As an alternative, VALET (similar to Modules which you may have seen or used on other clusters) encourages the modularization of such changes: describe the changes that must be made to the environment for a software package, and apply those changes to the current shell alone. This workshop discusses the capabilities and use of VALET presented by the UD IT-RCI group in-person and via Zoom.

Prerequisites: Basic Linux/Unix skills or attended Introduction to Linux/Unix Hands-on Workshop (Part 1 and 2).

Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2025
Time: 10:15AM – 12:15PM EST
Location: Faculty Commons (116 Pearson Hall) or via Zoom

Registrationis required and you will be sent a Zoom link the day before if you register for remote. There is an in-person limit of 20.

Getting Started with Version Control using Git

Version control is the lab notebook of the digital world: it’s what professionals use to keep track of what they’ve done and to collaborate with other people. Software, laboratory notebooks, papers, and anything that changes over time or needs to be shared can and should be stored in a version control system. This hands-on workshop gives an introduction to Git, a free and open-source version control system. Participants will learn how to create a repository, add files and commit changes, manage branches, and pushing/pulling to/from remote repositories using GitHub presented by UD faculty, Ulf Schiller, Computer and Information Sciences in-person with support by UD IT-RCI group. No remote option.

Prerequisites: Must bring your own laptop (Windows, Mac, Linux) with Git installed and create a GitHub account using your @udel.edu email. Basic Linux/Unix skills or attended Introduction to Linux/Unix Hands-on Workshop (Part 1 and 2) is recommended.

Date: Tuesday, April 22, 2025
Time: 1:30PM – 3:30PM EST
Location: Studio C (304 Pearson Hall)

Registrationis required and you will be sent a Zoom link the day before if you register for remote. There is an in-person limit of 25.
