Corpus Christi and la Feria

This week was a very important time in Spain, and fortunately we were able to experience the celebrations that go along with the holiday of Corpus Christi. When I first came to Spain, I wasn’t exactly sure what the holiday is about, but it is basically just the celebration of the belief in the blood and body of Christ. There were many parades and demonstrations. First, there was a pagan parade with all kinds of different displays, and the next day there was the religious procession, which was a bit more formal. The day of the religious procession was also an important day for Spain because the new king officially took power.

Another exciting aspect of the Corpus Christi celebrations is the fair, or “la feria.” There are all kinds of tents to eat or dance in, as well as a large amusement park like area. The fair was lots of fun, and I’m glad I was able to experience it!
