APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 26, 2025
Our partner university in the Czech Republic has again offered an opportunity for University of Delaware students (up to two students) to study for a semester at the University of Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic. Study is during what they call the “winter” semester, but it is roughly equivalent to our Fall semester (approx. 3rd week of September 2025 – end of January 2026) : their semester starts in February and runs into June. This offer is for in-person attendance in the Czech Republic.
The University of Delaware signed a cooperative agreement with the University of Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic and it was renewed fall 2022. We are hoping to develop a long-term agreement for student exchange but as an interim step, the University of Hradec Králové college that houses the departments of Archaeology, Archival Science, History, Philosophy and Social Sciences, Political Science, Social Work, and Sociology, has offered to accept up to two UD students for their courses (taught in English) for the fall of 2025. The offer includes no tuition fees; furthermore there is an opportunity to apply for one scholarship of 50,000 CZK (approx. $2070) that helps defray a portion of the room and board costs for the semester for one of the students.
Hradec Králové is a relatively small town with a beautiful medieval city center and a population of about 90,000 people. It is located along the Elbe River, about 70 miles east of the capital Prague. The university has a robust English-language exchange program with many international students. Unlike Prague, the city is off the tourist beaten path, and has a full Czech flavor.
Since the exchange program with the University of Hradec Králové is still being developed, it is not yet a finalized exchange program. One consequence of this is that unlike regular exchange programs, a UD student participating would take a leave of absence and not pay UD tuition for the semester(s) abroad; they would arrange to transfer credits for each course taken at Hradec prior to confirming their trip. Thus, a student with the Hradec scholarship would need to cover airfare and minor expenses.
Information about the exchange with all the necessary documents can be found here. Basic information about faculty, university, city of Hradec Králové, etc. can be found here; it is strongly recommend that interested students go through the page. A preliminary list of courses of Philosophical Faculty for academic year 2024/2025 can be found here as well as the preliminary list for 2025/2026.
Check out the stories of former exchange students here.
Interested students should contact Tom Rocek at rocek@udel.edu, who will be compiling and forwarding applications to the Czech Republic. The Hradec offer is restricted to areas closely related to students with majors in the departments listed above.
