Program Description
South Africa is breathtaking in its beauty, plentiful in its natural and human resources, and exceptional in its diversity and cultural richness. This study abroad program focuses on three interrelated areas: 1) Social issues of Crime and HIV/Aids in South Africa, 2) The historic and contemporary challenges facing the country as taught by our partners at the University of Pretoria, and 3) experiencing the unique and rich context of South Africa. Students will learn about the major social problems facing South Africa in the post-Apartheid era. Selected excursions and service-learning activities will complement the course materials. Service learning activities include working with children in local orphanages and day care centers. Excursions highlight South Africa’s culture, heritage, wildlife, landscape, and adventure, making it an excellent place to explore. Examples of cultural excursions include visits to Nelson Mandela Museum, Soweto in the Pretoria/Johannesburg areas, visits to Robben Island (the prison where Mandela spent most of his incarceration) in Cape Town and a 5-day safari in Kruger National Park. All students will be housed at a very comfortable hotel located close to the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, and in a water front area hotel in Cape Town. In Pretoria and Cape Town, the hotels are in walking distance of shops, eating establishments, theater, banks, and in Pretoria, near the University of Pretoria. See the link to the Program Brochure.
