In partnership with John William Gallery and 1313 N Market, the Delaware Art Museum is pleased to offer its third Emerging Curators Platform for one University of Delaware Museum Studies, Art, and/or Art History student.
The fellowship consists of a three-session cycle covering the fall, winter, and spring sessions. Under the guidance of the Curator of Contemporary Art at DelArt, participants simultaneously produce three previously scheduled exhibitions while developing the schedule for the following year. The loan exhibitions will be developed working exclusively with contemporary artists based in the greater Delaware/Philadelphia region. This model provides the opportunity to both execute an exhibition while considering a future program. In addition to the support of the Curator of Contemporary Art, participants will have access to staff members across DelArt’s departments as well as the professional staff of John William Gallery and communications support from 1313 N Market.
The fellowship provides guidance for the Emerging Curator from the practical skills of exhibition planning to the indispensable ability to engage deeply and authentically with the unique artistic landscape of Delaware. This opportunity also supports early-stage curators eager for professional skill building within the framework of a community-situated museum and the vibrant public gathering space that is 1313 N Market. Additionally, participants in the program will learn museum best practices for research, exhibit design, didactics, and display choices that support the artist’s intentions and the visitor experience.
This fellowship aspires to support people from underrepresented communities in the museum field broadly and in the role of curator specifically, especially people who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Additionally, the exhibition program seeks to showcase the work of artists from communities historically underrepresented in museum exhibition and collection programs.
RECEIVING THE FELLOWSHIP
The Fellowship will average 15 hours per week for the entirety of the fall, winter, and spring sessions totaling an anticipated 510 hours. A stipend of $15.50 per hour is available for the Fellowship with an anticipated total of $7,905. The Fellowship is intended for those who are currently enrolled in UD’s Museum Studies, Art, and/or Art History programs and are interested in a curatorial career. The project will require on-site work at DelArt, as well as off-site research and studio visits. It is the responsibility of the student to work with their department to obtain academic credit for this fellowship, if that is of interest.

The deadline to apply is April 21, 2025. Notification of the successful applicant will be announced by May 5, 2024. The Fellowship will commence at the start of UD’s fall 2025 semester and conclude at the end of the spring 2026 semester.
