Health Professions Evaluation Committee

The Health Professions Evaluation Committee (HPEC) is a committee that supports UD students who are preparing to apply to medical, dental, optometry or podiatry school. UD students submit an HPEC application dossier in the spring of their junior or senior year, or after graduation. Each spring the Committee of local doctors, dentists and UD faculty interview each student that meets the Committee requirements, and evaluates the student’s credentials for professional school admission. A University-level recommendation is awarded to qualified students.

Medical Scholars Program

The College of Arts and Sciences offers a dual major, eight-year (4+4) academic program sponsored by the University of Delaware in collaboration with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine. Freshman students from any college or major at the University of Delaware are eligible to apply.

Living Learning Community

First semester freshmen can apply for housing in the Pre-health Profession Living Learning Community (LLC). This LLC is sponsored by the Center for Health Profession Studies, and all students in this program share a common interest in healthcare. A graduate student mentor is assigned to the LLC and arranges guest speakers in the health professions, and organizes social events. Students will explore and learn more about various healthcare professions.

Study Abroad

The Center for Health Profession Studies runs study abroad opportunities for students to learn about healthcare in other countries through the Center for Global Programs and Services. Typically, during the three-week microsemester students shadow physicians for 75 hours. These experiences can help applicants to health profession schools distinguish themselves from other applicants by giving applicants a different perspective on healthcare in other countries. The study abroad experiences are held in cooperation with the organization Atlantis.
