Medical Scholars Program

The College of Arts and Sciences offers a dual major, eight-year (4+4) academic program sponsored by the University of Delaware in collaboration with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine. Students from any college or major at the University of Delaware is eligible to apply. 

Freshman Year:

Students interested in the MSP attend either a Fall or Spring semester informational meeting and declare an interest in the program. Students then join our interest group and are welcome to attend monthly MSP meetings. During this year it is encouraged that students focus on being successful in their academics. Students also begin to accumulate volunteer and shadowing hours, obtain letters of recommendation, and work on their formal application to the MSP (open the summer between Freshman and Sophomore year).

Sophomore Year:

During the early Fall semester sophomore year, students submit a formal application to the program. Once accepted, students are required to attend all MSP events, cohort specific programming, and maintain academic excellence. At this time students enroll a second major, Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, and complete the required coursework in conjunction with their primary major. Students will declare their affiliation preference by the end of the sophomore year.

Junior Year:

During the Fall semester junior year, students interview with their affiliation. Following a successful interview students begin to prepare for the MCAT. Juniors are required to attend all MSP events, cohort specific programming, and maintain academic excellence (as dictated by their affiliation). Students are strongly encouraged to take the MCAT in the Spring of junior year.

Senior Year:

During the early Fall semester Senior year, students submit formal applications to their affiliations through AMCAS/ACOMAS. Seniors are required to attend all MSP events, cohort specific programming, and maintain academic excellence (as dictated by their affiliation). Students who retake the MCAT during Senior year must achieve a minimum required score on the MCAT prior to medical school matriculation. The MSP is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences (Medical Scholars Program) and managed through the Center for Health Profession Studies under the direction of Saskia Richter, PhD, ATC.
