Optimized Design and Fabrication of Optical and Infrared Metasurfaces for Scalable Manufacturing

By: Alexander Winters Chair: Mark Mirotznik

ABSTRACT

Electromagnetic metamaterials have developed significantly in recent years. While the power and utility of these applications continue to grow, they typically utilize complex nano-scale surfaces that require the use of traditional cleanroom techniques, which complicate efforts to increase throughput. Newer high-throughput fabrication technologies have demonstrated that they can effectively avoid these problems. However, these newer fabrication technologies require unique materials, designs, and optimization procedures that reflect their inherent challenges. The work within this thesis sought to develop new design procedures with integrated fabrication constraints to alleviate these challenges.

My research focused on two main application areas. Specifically,

  • Design of anti-reflective (AR) moth-eye films that could be manufactured using roll-to-roll fabrication processes.
  • Metal-dielectric-dielectric (MDD) narrowband and broadband electromagnetic absorbers. A variety of new absorber designs are introduced, along with highly customizable optimization code that allow these absorbers to create any desired IR spectral profile.

Overall, the unique devices and design procedures presented in this thesis highlight the versatility of metamaterials and provide a unique alternative to traditional attempts to harness their potential.
