Field Trips

Submitted by Emma Smith the 2024 Spring program in London, England…

A big part of the classes here in London are field trips. I have gone on four field trips so far including a walk around the City of London, two trips to see the plays The Mousetrap and Cowbois, and a trip to the Tate Modern Museum. These field trips give students an opportunity to go out in London and explore and I appreciate this because it is hard during the week with classes to go explore the depths of the city on your own time. Theatre is largely famous in London so it was such a neat experience to be able to see the different theatres as well as their well-known plays. The theatres have all different architecture and food and bars provided to enhance your experience there. For my art class, we went to the Tate Modern museum which is a free museum to the public that holds the work of many famous artists. I have never walked around an art museum with the perspective that I have now on art since being in this class. It makes me appreciate the art as well as the artist more which makes the walk around the museum more enjoyable and personal. My art professor is very knowledgeable about many different artists so it is very nice when he can shed some light on certain pieces of art that I may not understand. During my field trip to the City of London, we got to see all of its financial hubs, banks, and the Royal Exchange. This was a unique trip because my professor would stop us at certain buildings and explain their history as well as tying in the fact that London has developed to be a global city. I have many more field trips coming up to more theatres and museums which will be a great experience because it makes me feel like I am experiencing London’s culture to its fullest while also being with a professor who knows all about its history. These field trips have definitely been a unique experience and I am very excited to go on more. (Submitted on February 18, 2024)
