Greece: Walking Around

Submitted by Dara McNally on the 2022 spring semester program in Athens, Greece…

The first week abroad was a lot of things all at once. Considering I arrived late, I had a lot of catching up to do really quickly, and there were a few things that stood out to me.

In the first image, with my own shoes for scale, the sidewalks on side streets are extremely narrow and are often blocked by trees or telephone poles. This means you need to plan ahead when walking to make sure you can get around them or cross the street. Relatedly, cars don’t seem to wait for pedestrians, so people seem to cross the street whenever and wherever.

In the second image, I definitely found it interesting that you could see mountains and a good bit of the city from pretty much any high ground. Campus was great to explore for some views!

And lastly, there are orange trees absolutely everywhere! It’s always really nice to see that cute little splash of color whenever I walk around!
